This paraphrase is already noticeably dated, and was originally written to address specific problems of a specific locale and people. However, it's unique and practical approach is still refreshing to read. I think other admirers of Clarence Jordan, Koinonia Partners, and Habitat for Humanity will find it interesting.

Other, free and Koinonia approved electronic versions of Jordan's entire Cotton Patch translations can be found on the web, but the Kindle version definitely has advantages (and of course is always available when offline once downloaded to one's device).

I've been sharing the parables from Matthew with a group of elderly people in the retirement community where I live. They love them. I was afraid they'd be a little offended by the light touch that Jordan gives his versions, but they appreciated the clarity of ideas that these Cotton Patch volumes bring out. I highly recommend all the Cotton Patch books.

Clarence Jorden reached out to the rural south in a way that dirt farmers and country folk could relate to. Replacing Jeruselam with Atlanta, Nasereth with Valdosta, Georgia, this loose translation of the books of Matthew (Matt) and John (Jack) takes the meaning of the original Greek text and plops it right down in Georgia and Alabama in the mid 20th century. Amusing at times, and cutting close to home at other times, this translation made me evaluate prejudices and societal norms the same way Jesus challenged the Pharasees and Sadusees in his time. This is not meant to replace the Bible, but it may be a good tool for someone looking to reach out to someone who does not see much relevance in a 2000 year old story.

I used these in seminary when we studied the Cotton Patch Gospel; great resources to make the gospel message come alive! the story of Clarence Jordan is also moving and inspiring. if you get one, you need to get them all (4 books in the set) to get the full message. love it!

Don't purchase if you are a Yankee, you won't get a thing out of it. If you are a Southerner, you will love it. BTW, John's Gospel is short a few chapters. I know Mr. Jordan has passed, so I suspect he did not finish John. Its possible a printing error caused this in my book, so I need to check the cause.

Because i grew up listing to audio tapes from Clarence Jordan his way of speaking is as close to me as marrow in my bones. I have been away for so many years and am delighted to find now I can get his writings downloaded elecronically. What a joy it is to read and re-read the stories of Jesus in the south Georgia Vernacular again and now with years of living to hear them fresh again bumping up against the way I have heard the Gospel preached and taught in church school and from the pulpits over so many years and feel afresh the raw energy of the Gospel demanding to be seen and heard and tasted and smelled with all of our being. Thank you.

A very good read but must consider the time this book was written and the language may be offensive. Should remember who writer was as he started Habitat for Humanity. I like it because he places the happenings into a Southern backdrop. Recommend!

Excellent rendering of two of the favorite gospels. While the local references may frighten some, these books bring the scriptures up to the current language and understanding of the bible truths.
