Editorial Reviews

Megadeth s Dave Mustaine has personally overseen the new 20th Anniversary Edition of the band s most popular album, 1992 s double Platinum-certified Countdown to Extinction,
Presented in a 2CD lift-top box, Countdown to Extinction s new commemorative edition pairs the remastered original album with a 1992 concert, recorded live at San Francisco s Cow Palace, which has never before been released in its entirety. The concert audio has been newly remixed for this release.

The lift top box includes a booklet with a new liner notes essay by music journalist Kory Grow, a 24 x 36 poster and four collectible postcards.

History

Countdown to Extinction, Megadeth s fifth studio album, was recorded in Los Angeles in 1992 as rioting raged across the city in response to the Rodney King trial verdicts. American tensions weren t limited to LA, by any means, as the Gulf War was still fresh in people s minds, the state of the environment was becoming headline news, and President George H.W. Bush was seeking reelection in a heated campaign season. Out of this turmoil, Megadeth was inspired to create Countdown to Extinction, considered by many to be the band s best and most accessible album

Since I've been collecting Megadeth stuff since decade ago, this is a must buy for me for the live cd and poster alone. They did a good job on remastering one, unlike 2004 remastered which has different snare sound ,this one pretty much retained the same sound like the original release but with notable louder bass volume and slightly thicker guitar tone.

The second disc is awesome, it's the classic Megadeth 90's line up playing songs from peace sells, so far, rust in peace, countdown and "This was my life" and the title track are on the setlist, cant ask for more! I believe those 2 songs has not been played since 1995 until the recent Countdown anniversary tour, off course without the original album line up.

While I like the 2004 remastered series for its bonus stuff (unreleased songs and demos), I wish they remaster the album itself the way they did for this Countdown anniversary, just make the sound more "in your face" but no remixing.

Twenty years ago, my dad stood outside a record store at midnight to buy this album for me, I didn't get it from him until almost a month later and had to 'buy' it from him. I think he got more release swag for being an 'old' guy. So now twenty years later for the remastered release, I ordered on Amazon and in less than 24-hours I have it in my hands and immediately in the cd player (surprised it still worked). I still think this was Megadeth's best lineup, at least musically - I know personally they had a lot of issues. The remastered tracks sound even more amazing than they did 20 years ago. Get this album (along with Rust In Peace) and bang your head til you bleed!

I remember buying CTE on casette back in July 92, and I was hooked on the first listen. Then later, I bought the 2004 remix and remastered version on CD and I didn't really like that version as I had thought I would. Now, CTE has been put back into its original state, but remastered for better sound quality,...and it doesn't get any better than this! This will remind all fans who remember the first release how awesome this album was and still is! All instruments, vocals, and effects are clearly heard and it all sounds crystal clear. Buy this version only! Don't waste your time and money ont the 2004 remixed, remastered version. Buy this version instead and hear "Countdown" the way it should be heard! Oh, by the way,..the bonus CD of the live performance at The Cow Palace is awesome as well. I went to this tour back in Dec. 92 in Houston, Tx. and the setlist was the same as on the CD. Awesome show!

I am a huge megadeth fan. I have the original album and the remixed and mastered one as well. I bought this specifically for the live album which is a must have. Some of the tracks they play on it you can't hear live anymore or are very very rare and these are GREAT quality.

The main album sounds crisp, not heavily edited and no loudness tweaks. The added poster is nice too, but I wish it was a standard 3 x 5.

If you are a fan, you likely already have it and may be apprehensive about getting it- Don't be. Get the live cd for you and give the other cd to someone who needs more metal in their life!

Yes it's hard to believe that it has been twenty years since Megadeth released "Countdown To Extinction", It was a creative peak for Megadeth at this time when you take in 1990's "Rust In Peace" and 1994's "Youthanasia". All three albums also featured what is considered the classic line up of Megadeth with Dave Mustaine, Marty Friedman, Dave Ellefson and drummer Nick Menza. "Countdown To Extinction" has already been re-mastered in 2004 with extra bonus/demo tracks however the overall mix left a lot to be desired so the good news is that twenty year version is taken from the original version and is not overly compressed, nor does it suffer from the dreaded loudness issue.

"Countdown To Extinction" would give Megadeth some of their biggest hits ever, the brilliant "Symphony Of Destruction" leading the way. There is the brilliant "Foreclosure Of A Dream" with its slower pace and political theme it's a song that is a true now as it was back then. The album is packed with great songs such as "Sweating Bullets", "Countdown to Extinction" with its driving bass and album opener "Skin o' My Teeth". This version omits the bonus tracks that were included on the 2004 re-master.

Also included is a second disc of a 1993 performance from the Cow Palace. It includes 16 live tracks as well as an intro and shows how tight that particular line up of Megadeth was. The live performance draws heavily from "Countdown To Extinction" but does include classics from their previous albums. Including a great version of "Holy Wars... The Punishment Due".

With this new twenty year anniversary release Megadeth have fixed the problems of the 2004 re-master that in all honesty was mixed poorly.

Of course, this is a great album. However, I would suggest you stick to the original CD master if you can. This one has been mastered too loud, so much so, the kick drum distorts with the music slightly falling away each time due to the compression.

Hope this helps.
