Editorial Reviews

In November and December of 2012, Megadeth blazed hot on the band s 'Countdown to Extinction 20th Anniversary Tour,' ripping through their entire double platinum 1992 album from start to finish before performing other classics from their recorded catalog. Recorded and filmed at Los Angeles' Fox Theatre last December, Countdown to Extinction: Live is a definitive document of the acclaimed, sold-out tour.

In addition to Megadeth's blistering performance of the entire Countdown to Extinction album, including the essential 'Symphony Of Destruction,' 'Foreclosure Of A Dream,' 'Sweating Bullets,' and 'Skin O' My Teeth,' Countdown to Extinction: Live features all of the other Megadeth classics the band performed at the epic concert, including 'Holy Wars' and 'Hangar 18' from 1990's Rust in Peace, 'Peace Sells' from the band's influential, platinum certified 1986 album, Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?, and 'Trust' from 1997's platinum certified Cryptic Writings.

That is what the title of this latest live Megadeth record should be.

Now, let me state first that I drive an 18 wheeler for a living, and the first time I listened to this CD was in my truck while working. The stereo in the truck is marginal at best, and I got its two little speakers sounding as good as I can. But I can only turn the volume up so high because 1) I need to be able to hear things around me while I drive over the noise of the truck, and 2) if I turn it up too loud, then the stereo can't take it and starts to make weird noises. My first impression was that I can't hear anything they're doing very well. So I put the CD on in my car, and I can turn it up more and I can hear everything better.

That said, I have to say I'm a bit disappointed in this CD. What could've been - no, should've been - a great live tribute to a great Megadeth album (like Rust In Peace Live was) is a muddy sounding, downtuned version of CTE and six other classic songs. I've read some reviews where people say that the downtuning of the songs gives them a fresh sound "after hearing them to death". I disagree with that assertion wholeheartedly. Songs that I've enjoyed listening to for 20 years or more just don't sound right when taken down an entire step. You expect to hear certain notes on solos that aren't there. A song that starts with an A5 chord now starts at G5, or E5 now to D5, and everything from there is transposed down, and it's just disconcerting. Maybe I'm picking on this point too much, but I think it needs to be said - The tuning on this is a real downer for me. And I don't know if it's the tuning or the mixing, but the guitars are hard to hear sometimes, and it almost all sounds toneless. "Trust" is a good example.

Many bands seem to go downhill with latter day live performances and albums (Metallica) but Megadeth sound as amazing as they did when they toured this killer record and still regularly release amazing, heavy, quality albums. The setlist is great, the production is awesome, the performance is flawless and the packaging was great with lots of great photo's. Worth every penny and a worthy addition to any metal collection and essiential for Megadeth fans \m/\m/

I am a huge Megadeth fan ... Have every album , seen them live , blah blah blah... Here's the important thing though. I have almost every Megadeth DVD of live performances from the "War Chest" set, "Rude Awakening ", "That One Nite in Buenos Aires" and " Rust in Peace" Live at the Palladium , just to name a few! .. This newest addition is definitely a huge let-down for me... The sound engineer should never work again !! The bass is way too loud and "no" it's not just because I'm supposedly not used to hearing it , as said in other comments... There is a difference between over powering and balanced.. The guitar sound is muffled, sounds really watered down.. Dave's vocals are terrible almost strained, I don't know if he was struggling with a cold or what. Knowing the album , you are waiting for him to hit certain vocal notes like in the song captive honor, and you get what seems to be a very painful laryngective growl from Dave Mustaine ... Shawn Drover , the drummer. Hmm, I really don't know why Dave keeps this man around. As always a complete bore to watch and a huge dissapointment when it comes to those signature parts that Nick Menza had initially put down, such as the intro to skin o my teeth.. I even actually laughed out loud at Shawn Drovers attempt at the ending drum solo to ashes in your mouth.... Overall , the worst Megadeth DVD I own , the whole performance seemed "phoned in" and disappointing in many ways .... Thought I was commenting on the DVD , sorry..

It's only ten dollars. That's why it's 3 stars instead of 2. If this were branded as an "official bootleg" and was a download from their web site, I'd be less disappointed. The sound is terrible. Megadeth has 3 other live albums where the sound is much better - "That One Night," "Rude Awakening" and "Rust In Peace - LIve." All three are much stronger. It's unfortunate, though, as I was looking forward to hearing so many new songs live with Ellefson and Chris Broderick on them, and the mix/sound quality just kills it.

The sound quality is bad. This is a guitar band yet you can't really hear them. I didn't even make through the whole album.

I'm puzzled as to the mixed reviews on bad sound, mix, etc...what kind of crappy i-pod or headphones are you using? I do my CD listening in my car (which happens to have a premium sound system) and this thing rocks! In fact I think I like this live show better than the actual studio CD of Countdown to Extinction! I'm loving these live releases of full "classic" albums (check out the Rust in Peace Live too if you haven't already)! Maybe they aren't "perfect" shows to every fussy listener BUT for me, sure brings back great memories of seeing them live, and makes the long commute bearable. Megadeth rules!
