I was inspired to write Countdown 'til Daddy Comes Home when I searched for books to help my 4 year daughter cope with her father deploying to Afghanistan and found nothing that quite fit our situation. My book is not only a great story for kids it has real suggestions for parents on how to keep your family connected during deployments or frequent business travel.

My son was having a harder time with this deployment because he is old enough to understand that daddy's gone now. He loved this book, especially since it talked about what the kids do at home to pass the time and grandma visiting because that's part of what we do as well. His 5yo sister was able to read most of it to him as well so they bonded reading it together. It is a great book for those kids too little to understand their big feelings but old enough to realize that they won't see daddy for a long time.

While this is geared towards someone in the service, it also works for airline pilot Daddys! I wanted to find a story to read to my 3 year old to open a dialogue and help him process his emotions that he goes through when Daddy is on a trip. This book has been perfect to address what he doesn't like to talk openly about, and it has really helped calm him during our bedtime routine. I think it helps him to see a story about another family going through the same thing to normalize the situation a little better. I love this book and would very highly recommend it!

Very cute book talking about how a child feels when missing daddy. There are some really great discussion questions in the back of the book I thought would be helpful. My husband wasn’t a fan of the page about Steve, most people know who Jody is so he can’t take it seriously. I would hope that there would be some type of positive male figure in my child’s life while daddy is gone, but one that doesn’t fill the actual roles of his daddy which it feels like to me this book describes. To each his own.

'Countdown 'Til Daddy Comes Home' deals with the fear and anxiety of separation in a positive way and constantly reinforces the love of the absent parent for the child. Her suggestions for dealing with the concept of 'time' will enable a child to visualize the return of a parent and prepare for homecoming. My memories go back to World War II when I had a book about a daddy serving his country. My own father was deployed to the Middle East with the British Army for nearly six years without leave. My mother and I read that book every night. I still have the book! I know that children will treasure 'Countdown 'Til Daddy' just as I did many years ago.

I'm in the military and going through a really long technical school. Its been really hard on my 3.6 year old. He LOVES LOVES LOVES to read this book with me, through not as much with mom when I'm gone, but it seemed to get him to understand that I was leaving but I would come back. I suspect when I eventually have to go on a deployment and he is a bit older and able to understand more of the book, it will be even greater.
