Clearly, some of the reviewers here didn't "get" that this is a spoof. My wife and I saw them perform much of this program and more at the Utrecht festival a number of years ago and it was the funniest performance -- yet superbly performed -- that I've ever attended.
It would have been even better to have had one of these performances available on video, "Victor Borge-style". You can't see the interactions between the performers on the CD which were half the fun. You can imagine how much you would miss if you only had audio recordings of Victor Borge's performances. The same is true here.
One of most memorable pieces performed on that program in Utrecht is not on this recording. At the beginning of the second half, one of the singers came out with a pianist not seen in the first half to perform Purcell's Music for a While. OK, I thought. Odd choice of piano to accompany him on this Baroque work at an Early Music festival but I'm open to it. We'll see what happens.
The piano plays the introduction, the singer begins singing the piece beautifully. After a few more bars we hear a note in the piano that clearly doesn't belong there. Then a couple more. Then a LOT more as the accompanist morphs the accompaniment into a full-fledged jazz rendition of the accompaniment while the singer plays it straight. What a hoot!! Too bad it didn't make the recording!

Being new to the countertenor voice, I found very refreshing and unique the deliverance of "Je suis grise", and "Una Furtiva Lagrima". These two arias make the entire CD worth-having, at least for me. The singing affections by Visse in "Je suis grise" are stunning and beautiful. Such a voice and technique! I'd heard "Una Furtiva Lagrima" in the tenor voice before, but had to hear in the countertenor register to fall in love with the aria.

The arrangements and orchestrations on this album belong to a soft rock radio station or an elevator rather than to a classical music collection.

Even if the packaging and play list fails to tip the hand of the performers, the semi-sleazy horn crescendo that opens this lovely little bit of musical satire should cue the listener to the joke. The pompous liner notes are a masterpiece of satiric writing. With great seriousness, they discuss a 1557 version of AVE MARIA which they assert is presented in this album in English translation.
What is sung here is "Maria" from West Side Story.
This short (less than 40 minutes) CD is a sly satire on the popularity of the "Three Tenors" recordings--in which a trio of talented but aging opera stars recorded show tunes that did not strain their voices. The liner notes speak of a struggle of "tenors vs. countertenors". The album purports to be the countertenors reclaiming musical material that was stolen from them.
I find the musical in-jokes hilarious but that's not the only reason I love this little CD. The enthusiasm of the performers is infectious. On this album, three distinctive and outstanding voices are showcased singing stuff that they would not normally perform but which they obviously love. Most of the music is familiar, making this the first album I reach for when someone wants to know what a countertenor sounds like. As a bonus, Andreas Scholl composed the song "White as Lilies" which sounds like an updated version of Dowland and sings it here with his usual panache. It's quite lovely.
Kudos to Reinhardt Wagner who re-arranged this stuff for the countertenor voice. I'm in danger of preferring his version over more conventional performances.

This offering, compiled on the heels of the mightily successful "three tenors," does not disappoint if one takes it for what is is: a spoof. And what a wonderful spoof this is! The three vocalists here sing pieces outside of their normal repertory (which is early music and baroque). Yet, the singers are both technically impressive and genuinely entertaining while they are at it. In fact, Pleurez Mes Yeux and Habanera (as well as the little comical vignette Je sui grisse) are so perfect that it's not even funny anymore. Male voices, in comparison to females', offer lesser vibrato and greater tonal variety. Sometimes, when listening to this, I catch myself on a thought that the medieval people who eschewed female singers were on to something. P.S. I'm a female, so no misogyny there.

YUK! YUK! AND DOUBLE YUK!!!!
I am absolutely mystified as to why Andreas Scholl, with his fine voice, would be a part of this type of album. It's disgraceful! The voice of Visse is annoying to the point of agony and one hopes that listeners who hear countertenors for the first time on this album won't give up on them.
Bertin is passably good but the biggest disappointment is Scholl. The song selections are inane in that they do not fit the voices. To hear "My Way" sung by any countertenor is ludicrous; I hope Frankie isn't listening.
The only song I found attractive was "White as Lilies" sung by Scholl. If you love countertenors don't buy this CD. It downright degrading to the countertenor voice and repertoire!!!!!

I am a fan of countertenors (Scholl, Bowman, Deller, Visse, Jacobs) but I have to say that this album was a complete dissapointment! This album is a joke!!!
I especially like Andreas Scholl voice and although in this album his voice is as great as usual I would advice that anyone wanting to listen to really great examples of this countertenor's voice look elsewhere! Try instead one of the many albums of Bach's cantatas where he has appeared, or maybe his Handel arias album called "Ombra mai fu", or even his "Heroes" album!

Joyful counter-tenors

Although some listeners have said this is simply the trio having fun, it is greatly enjoyable. The first song (O sole mio) is rather surprising, but the rest couldn't be bettered. Love it.

Viel Spaß mit den Countertenören
Reviewed in Germany on March 8, 2011Verified Purchase
Inhalt:
O Sole mio
Habanera (Carmen)
Pleurez, mes yeux (Le Cid)
Maria (West Side Story)
Reponds a ma tendresse (Samson et Dalila)
White as Lilies
Je sius grise (La Perichole)
My Way
Una furtiva lagrima

Divertido pero corto y con poco fuste. No me lo volvería a comprar ni lo recomiendo. Le pongo dos estrellas por la categoría de los intérpretes, pero es una castaña.

It is a bad commercial product
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 1, 2015Verified Purchase
It is a bad commercial product. Only the last song (the 9th) is worthy. I am really disappointed about this record. I expected more from these 3 amazing voices. The selection of songs has no imagination and it doesn't exalt the greatness of these voices
