I liked that Reese was a caring person and willing to heal in order to move on from the death of her deceased husband Derek. I liked that the author had her have a good but short marriage. The temptation is to have former boyfriends or husbands of heroines be jerks, to make the heroes look better. The author did not do that here. By the same token I liked the fact that the heroine did not grieve the entire book. It was not looking for something depressing and that certainly would have been to read about someone in pain throughout the novel. I liked that the premise of the story was not common and enjoyed the HEA ending.
Reese has just lost the love of her life, her husband of less than a year, Derek. She is left feeling responsible for his death, although it was clearly an accident. Wallowing in her sorrow and guilt, she has shut off from life. Finally deciding that it's time to let go and try living again, she decides to go on a month-long trek in the mountains. But when she gets to the place where her adventure is about to begin, she finds things are not what she expected.
Logan Donnelley is in charge of Donnelley Tours along with his three younger brothers and parents. He is outspoken, a loner, and rough around the edges. He is the one who takes on mountain climbing and when his mother is hurt and can't take Reese on her trip, Logan takes on the task.
Reese is used to mild-tempered Derek, but when she and Logan find themselves alone, she can't avoid the attraction she feels for the man who brings out her strong temperament. Logan has been hurt in the past and the last thing he wants is to fall for another "city girl". But life seems to get in the way of the most perfectly laid out plans and both Reese and Logan find that just when they thought they couldn't open up their hearts, love might still find a way in.
I loved the interaction between these two and the tenderness Logan showed towards Reese was so endearing. Meeting the other brothers was great and seeing the wonderful relationship they all have with each other and their parents, sure makes me ready to jump onto the next book.
I'm not even sure how to put into words a review for this book.
I was asked to read an ARC of this book for an honest review and I have no clue how to do that. Quite simply what ever I write will not do this story any justice.
There simply isn't the level of words I could produce to bring praise and honour to the book, the author and her writing. To understand wholeheartedly then you really really need to read this book for yourself.
I have read from this author previously and I have always loved and enjoyed her work. Her writing is not just words on a page or sentences strung together it has depth and meaning and amazing feeling laced throughout her words.
For me as a reader this brilliant author engages me, she evokes feelings and emotions from me and she does that all from her written words whenever I read her work, however THIS book took me to an all new level of emotional heights and lows. It grabbed me and sucked me in with ease but then wouldn't let go, I spent days after carrying the story around with me and thinking about the characters.
With Counting Stars I began reading it and I simply could not put it down at all, I needed to continue to each new chapter and stay on the journey along with the characters.
I kept thinking ok just one more chapter then I really must sleep, but before I knew it I had stayed up all night and finished the entire book at 3.30am !!
I felt like I was absorbed within the pages and as if I was part of the book but not part of the story, almost as though I was an invisible presence or aura watching the scene unfold before my eyes. Truly an exquisite experience.
The characters have so much depth and reality about them you can't help but feel them, their emotions and thoughts on their self exploration voyage.
The story centres around Reese a young woman that has her life all planned out and is ready to begin her journey when tragedy strikes.
In the blink of an eye her world comes to a sudden halt and she must find the strength to discover how to live again after death as well as coping with adjusting to continuing her life journey but on a new path to follow.
Reese sets out to find herself again on a voyage of self discovery and hopefully a healing one when she crosses paths with Logan Donnelly.
Logan is loud, outspoken and highly obnoxious. He is everything Reese does not need right now in her life.....or so she thinks.
In a twist of events Reese is stuck with Logan for a month long trip on which she learns Logan himself is a tortured soul that's hurting.
Can they help each other to heal and recover from both of their hurt?
This is an emotional story but a very realistic one that raised many questions for me and had me wondering about life, the universe and the way many people take for granted that their life will play out a particular way - myself included.
Life is indeed precious and extremely unpredictable, this story explores that with such a perfect blend of emotional turmoil yet always retaining the element of hope and faith that anything can be achieved.
I can't imagine having to go through the tragic experience that Reese endures, but through the story that Author Alannah Carbonneau delivers I got a taste of the realistic devastation it would bring. The story is written so beautifully you will feel sadness and hope at the same time, it's a strange thing to feel two strong emotions conflicting each other.
I developed many questions about fate, soul mates and love, all of which were provoked and aroused from reading this wonderful story.
This is one novel you should not miss out on I would recommend it with a complete open heart. You will love this.
I really wish I could award more than 5 stars for this exquisite piece of first class romance literature and I simply can not wait for the next book in The Donnelly Brothers series.
