Pros:
• This is a "full set" meaning you get the trains and tokens. (This is why I didn't get the India/Switzerland one which is also created for smaller groups.)
• Board and components seem to be of a decent quality so it's not going to fall apart on you.
• Most of the rules are pretty easy to understand, especially with a few YouTube tutorials
• Its engaging enough that you actually have to try as you map out your route but with enough luck sprinkled in as you draw your cards.
• It has replay-ability since it's not plot driven like other board games.
Cons:
• You only get 3 train sets so if you buy another expansion/extension board that uses 5-8 and not a full set down the line, you won't be able to utilize it.
• The city names/locations probably won't be very recognizable to the average American player. You will be spending a lot of time in the beginning trying to figure out where they are on the board when you first start playing. The cards do help with this though since they have a small image showing the route on them.
• It can be a little hard to read/locate spots where cities are close together and navigating the path between them.
• There were a couple instances of rules we weren't entirely sure of with the wild cards on tunnels and ferries as well as the longest route and the possibility of discarding destination tickets
• Keeping track of points takes some getting used to so recounts at the end are common.
Pro/Con:
• Created for 2 to 3 players
• Games can be 25-60 min
• It is not a fast paced game but more tactical
• It's easy to get some ugly strife going by purposely or accidentally blocking another players route.
But, TTR Nordic Countries, which is specifically designed for 2-3 players, is our favorite base game as it a fun and challenging map for two players (which is how we normally play). We also like that it incorporates both ferries (which require one or more locomotives to claim) and tunnels (which can very in length so you never know quite how long the route you are trying to claim will be) -- neither of which are included on the base USA map. Finally, we also like that it included two new color trains (i.e., purple and white -- the third color is black) compared to the base USA game.
The only negative thing I've noticed about the game is that it does not seem to be the best map to teach new players (especially non-gamers who may be unfamiliar with this sort of game to begin with). It seems one of the things we like best about the map (ferries and tunnels) turn out to be a bit too much to have to learn the first time around. So, it might not be the best way to enter the game or to introduce new players to the game (for that I'd recommend the USA map, but after a while that may feel too be too basic for seasoned players). But, if you are already familiar with any other TTR game, you should not be disappointed with Nordic Countries.
