I did think that this book would have more of a catchy-tune kind of feel to it, but was pleasantly surprised to find that it is expressed in a raw, emotional poetry based format. The country theme is all there well and strong, but the words read like pure poems written from a man confiding his inner most-deepest feelings in the pen and pad with no regard for anything else. This collection is raw, honest, and deeply personal and it is written in such a way that really I found it hard to put down once I had started. If I had to pick a favorite poem, it’d probably be “My Suction Cup Arrow Shot in the Dark” this poem really struck a chord with me on a personal level even so much that it reminded me of relationships long past. In summary, I’m more than satisfied with this collection and I highly recommend it to any poetry fans out there who are simply looking for a refreshingly new approach to the literary medium.
Some believe romantic poetry only appeals to women. Not the case with Country Songs and Backroad Love Notes. Many of the pieces are written about old cars, young love, coming of age and love gained and lost, which male readers will definitely identify with.
Two favorites are “Glow-in-the-Dark Love Note” and “Neon Buzzing”, which are crafted with such description and clarity that the reader feels like they can see the moment taking place. The collection is beautifully written.
