This book is pure PR garbage; a combination of light fluff and deception.

Here's a fun list of things that happened while Minnesota was comfortably under the blanket of T-paw's "no new taxes" pledge:
1. Property Taxes more than doubled
2. Tuition for public colleges nearly doubled (a tax on higher education)
3. State fees rose by 25%
4. Local taxes rose by 25%

Aside from that, his "heroic" budget balancing involved a lot of easy outs, accounting tricks, can-kicking, and very few actual tough decisions. He wrote a $1.9 billion IOU to Minnesota public schools that still hasn't been repaid. He raided the state's tobacco settlement fund. He took several billion dollars of one-time federal stimulus dollars while at the same time condemning Obama's stimulus in the media. He unilaterally slashed budget items in a procedure later ruled to be an egregious abuse of his unallotment power as described by the MN State Constitution. He defaulted on state obligations to local municipalities by making enormous cuts to local government aid, which is used to fund police and fire departments among other things. That last item caused the state's credit rating to be downgraded.

The legacy of Tim Pawlenty has very little to do with the contents of this book. We in Minnesota cannot ignore it, being two days into a government shutdown. He will not win his home state.

I liked this book alot. Pawlenty was a guy from a working class background. He worked in the stock yards in the crud as a kid. Heand his wife went to law school. They worked hard, and he went to the state house. He guided Minnesota, a blue state, with great ideas and low taxes. He writes a very clear message of great ideas and working with other people. He would be a good President.

There seems to be some unwritten rule that if you're going to run for President of the United States, you need to publish an auto-biography. And I can understand why: Each reader is a captive audience, allowing the candidate to speak about himself and his platform uninterrupted for hundreds of pages. But I think it's a great way to learn as much as you can about a candidate. Tim Pawlenty's book accomplishes the goal of familiarizing the reader with who this guy is and what his priorities are. Having said that, the writing style is a bit "vanilla" (sorry Tim, I had to make that joke again after your appearance on FOX), much like his style of speaking. There are some cute stories in there, and an occasional eye-rolling joke, but there were also some unnecessary redundancies (I mean, how many times must you tell us the exact statistics of how you slowed down government spending in Minnesota?). Ultimately, if you're looking for a way to become better acquainted with the current Republican Presidential candidates, this will do the trick for Pawlenty.

Lots of personal info, maybe too much for me, but enough red meat political inside stuff to keep me reading.

I read this as a humble story of Tim Pawlenty's life. The myriad of challenges he faced were presented not as needing sympathy, but as challenges to meet and beat. Coming from a hard-working family with low socio-econmic means, courage and the American spirit of enterprise led to greater opportunities. Giving God the glory for his many accomplishments keeps him in great stead with me.
