Courage to Stand: An American Story Hardcover – January 11, 2011

Here's a fun list of things that happened while Minnesota was comfortably under the blanket of T-paw's "no new taxes" pledge:
1. Property Taxes more than doubled
2. Tuition for public colleges nearly doubled (a tax on higher education)
3. State fees rose by 25%
4. Local taxes rose by 25%
Aside from that, his "heroic" budget balancing involved a lot of easy outs, accounting tricks, can-kicking, and very few actual tough decisions. He wrote a $1.9 billion IOU to Minnesota public schools that still hasn't been repaid. He raided the state's tobacco settlement fund. He took several billion dollars of one-time federal stimulus dollars while at the same time condemning Obama's stimulus in the media. He unilaterally slashed budget items in a procedure later ruled to be an egregious abuse of his unallotment power as described by the MN State Constitution. He defaulted on state obligations to local municipalities by making enormous cuts to local government aid, which is used to fund police and fire departments among other things. That last item caused the state's credit rating to be downgraded.
The legacy of Tim Pawlenty has very little to do with the contents of this book. We in Minnesota cannot ignore it, being two days into a government shutdown. He will not win his home state.
