But for me, the best part of the novels is Stewart's "philosophical" bent. He doesn't just tell the story, the books deal with real and personal problems that characters (usually Miami) are facing. And he will often write meaningful, moving narratives that may be reflective; at other times dispensing sound advice; and at other times simply clarifying life's issues. What is often a tangent but one that gives you insight into the characters and into life.
I love it when a new Miami Jones book comes out. I usually save it rather than reading it right away, because it's like getting to spend time with a good friend.
Some of it is awfully talky, but the dialogue still is mostly fluid and natural. The ending gives us two nice action sequences, though, and a satisfying resolution. Also, the copy editing is much better here than in RED SHIRT, which was stuffed with errors. There are a few mis-punctuated lines, but nowhere near the epidemic in the previous book. However, there is an egregious mathematical error towards the end. (When I was studying arithmetic, $1435 - $500 did not equal $835.)
For those of us who have followed MJ since book #1 we feel like proud parents. Both in mentoring a young basketball 🏀 superstar but in offering guidance to the gay player and her lover.
Pretty in-depth look into the African American struggles of sports and those hanger-on.
Really well written and the ending will keep you in suspense and uncertainties of the major role players.

Much like Lew Archer (Ross MacDonald) and Spenser ( Robert B. Parker), Miami in his laconic way “gets the job done”. Many of the regular supporting characters, make only minor appearances in Half Court Press, so the focus is on Miami’s unique way of solving cases and resolution of his personal life.
Once again AJ has crafted a wonderfully entertaining story, with many “life messages”.
Can’t wait for the next exciting adventure.
