What I always love about Colby's work is how she weaves in her world-building into the plots of her works. It's expertly done in The Courtesan's Avenger as we learn more about the changing culture under King Lionel's leadership. Her characters shine in the desert, appearing alive, unique, and of course, strong-willed. Dellwyn is lively, independent, determined, and a good person. Without giving too much away, those skills will be key on her journey and future journeys in the rest of the series.
While I greatly enjoyed the story, I often found the sexual overtones a bit off-putting. This is a personal preference that probably won't bother most, but for me, I had a hard time getting through the first half of the story. Eventually, the tone changes, but the initial overt sexuality and the ugly side of Dellwyn's job are necessary to the plot.
Overall, The Courtesan's Avenger is a great addition to the Desertera series, and I can't wait to read the next one.
Dellwyn Rutt is the best friend of Aya, book one's heroine, and in this one, she takes center stage. Dellwyn is a happy hooker, one of the stars of Desertera's lone brothel, but her life is soon turned upside down as the result of a change in the laws, implemented by the new ruler (and Aya's sorta-sweetie). A farmer-turned-religious fanatic adds to the complications.
As in the first book, I was amazed at Colby's ability to depict life in a brothel in what felt like a pretty realistic way without being very explicit. I very much appreciate this, since I'm somewhat squeamish (maybe even prudish!). :-)
That being said, I didn't enjoy this book at quite the same level I did the first one. It's mostly me, I think, since I had a hard time relating to Dellwyn's mind-set, especially around her job. I found her an appealing character, but didn't "get" her in the same way I got Aya. But that's just me, and by no means a reflection on the overall quality of the book.
I'm looking forward to the next one!
The book seemed a bit slow to start off, which was one of the reasons I didn't give it a full five stars. I also feel like there were a few minor plot points that could have been answered and wrapped up better. And I would have loved to have Aya in the book more, as she is one of my favorite characters in the series. Other than that, though, I had such a wonderful time reading The Courtesan's Avenger.
I loved that each character had their own unique development and personality. It was easy to understand what motivated each of them to act the way they did. And I could find parts of almost all of them that I could relate to. I really cared what happened to these characters, which more me is one of the most important aspects of a book.
Overall, I'd highly recommend The Courtesan's Avenger (and The Cogsmith's Daughter, if you haven't read that one yet). I can't wait for book three to come out!
