Courting Trouble is one of a collection of four novellas, each written by authors who are well-known for their Christian historical romances, set in the American West during the years after the US Civil War. Each of the wedding stories is a tale told to a young minister who feels compelled to break up with his lady love because she wouldn’t make a suitable minister’s wife. The stories of four weddings, related by four more experienced colleagues, are intended to make him reconsider.

Courting Trouble by Margaret Brownley is the story of lawyer Brock Daniels. He is called upon to defend the Black Widow, Grace Davenport, who is about to be tried for the murder of her third husband, with husbands number one and two also having died in mysterious circumstances. Unfortunately, this is the Wild West, and Grace isn’t exactly guaranteed a fair trial.

I liked Brock, and the way he took Jesse, Grace’s son, under his wing. I found Grace a little harder to get to know—this is the one story that would have benefited from being longer. I could see that Grace and Brock would make a good couple, but not in the short time allowed in a novella.

Grace is known as the Black Widow because she's had three husbands die. Brock is an attorney who gave up criminal law because his cocky attitude caused him to lose the case of his best friend. He only deals with contracts and real estate until Grace's son Jessie shows up to hire him to defend his mother. Through strange happenings Grace is found innocent but then Jessie helps Brock to find the real killer.

COURTING TROUBLE is not the first book I've read by, MARGARET BROWNLEY, and another reason I wanted a copy of FOUR WEDDINGS AND A KISS. Love MS BROWNLEY'S writing, both fiction and non-fiction.

Grace Davenport's reputation is not one to be desired. In fact, if you were a man, you'd do best to run in the opposite direction.

Attorney Brock Daniels is confronted by a potential client - a very young one at that - to take on a case he had no intentions of taking. That is until he meets the boys, mother. Brock changed his direction of law practice for a reason, but looking into Grace Davenport's eyes through the cell bars, has him rethinking his decision.

I've read about a million romances and the ones I remember and enjoy most are "the same only different." Few, however, are as different as "Courting Trouble" by Margaret Brownley. This heroine, who's been married three times, finds herself charged with murder and behind bars. With a son on the outside and a reluctant--though handsome--lawyer standing between her and a sorry outcome, she is truly between a rock and a hard place.

As always, this author writes with grace and charm. Each character stands strong and individual. It's amazing to find so much heart and depth in a novella-length story.

I received the book from the publisher but the opinion--I love this book--is my own.

Courting Trouble was totally different than anything I've read before. It is innovative, fresh, unique storytelling at it's best. Grace starts the story out in jail, and Brock doesn't want anything to do with criminal law. Plus he's a city-slicker in a town full of drunks. What hope do the two of them have in proving Grace's innocence when everyone believes she is guilty?
