I had read several Deeanne Gist books before and have never been disappointed, but this one let me down. First of all, I don’t like the heroine in my Christian novels to have an affair outside of marriage right before my eyes. I know it happens, but I read novels for entertainment and not to find out about real life. I’ve seen enough of that already. Secondly, I was not satisfied with how this one ended. I think there should have been a epilogue to let Essie find the husband she wanted, perhaps one of the previous men who had a complete turnaround or change of circumstances. I didn’t like how Ewing completely changed personalities after she told him the truth either. I probably should have given it two stars, because I just didn’t like it, but it did have some moments that pulled me in.
This one also had more errors than I ever remember in a Deeanne Gist novel. There were several point of view changes within the same paragraph or without any break to denote it, and sometimes there would be two speakers in the same paragraph. A random number was inserted in a sentence instead of the needed word at least twice. In addition, I can’t see how drawstrings would change a dress into riding bloomers where a woman could then ride a bicycle without changing. COURTING TROUBLE was nothing like what I’ve come to expect from this author.

Headstrong, nonconforming Essie Spreckelmeyer is at the heart of this Texas based historical romance-gone-wrong. Her love for the outdoors, wildlife and adventure come second only to her determination to find and secure a husband. Known as the town spinster, thirty-year-old Essie has no time to lose in her pursuit.
Going to great lengths to procure the man she has decided on, Essie's innocent exuberance for life is more than her pursued can take. Hurt and more than a little put out by his thwarting of her plans, Essie delves into her fathers newest pursuit, oil drilling, placing her directly into the sites of a gorgeous if not trustworthy drifter. Alas, her naivety and need to be desired leads her into a misadventure so big, only God can redeem her.
A lighthearted escapade, this is not. Courting Trouble is ripe with human frailty, error and sin. Yet Gist reminds us that even in our deepest shame and remorse, God is there for us, providing grace and forgiveness. Once we are ready to surrender completely, God is able to step in and reveal His perfect plan...
I'll definitely buy the sequel!
