Wilco’s thirteenth studio album, Cousin, was recorded in the band’s legendary Chicago studio – The Loft – over a period of two years. The ten new tracks are written by band leader Jeff Tweedy and feature musical performances by the longtime lineup of Nels Cline, Mikael Jorgensen, Glenn Kotche, John Stirratt, Pat Sansone and, of course, Tweedy on lead vocals.

After a short detour back into their country-influenced roots via last year’s Cruel Country double album, Cousin sees Wilco back in their more familiar progressive and experimental rock territory. Tweedy’s singular songwriting voice is in full evidence, with lyrics weaving across a variety of topics – from the iconoclastic to the introspective.

Adding a unique and new element to the recording process was the attachment of Welsh singer/songwriter Cate Le Bon as producer – the first time an outsider has been actively involved in a Wilco recording session for more than ten years, since Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Le Bon brought her unique musical perspective to the band’s trademark sound and provided them with an inspiring new challenge to push their musical boundaries.

Somehow Wilco, a band for nearly 30 years now, still surprises. The first track here is called "Infinite Surprise," which seems an apropos description of the group's modus operandi. Sonically this record strikes a unique balance between alt-country and experimental pop. They have a penchant for it—see the legendary Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and quietly flooring Ode to Joy—and the execution here is enchanting. The Nels Cline noodling is pared back and Tweedy's vocals are delivered with an unwavering nonchalance, which suits the songs—the experiments here are most noticeable in the production. Some of the songs share the martial groove of Ode to Joy's most propulsive tracks; some, like "Sunlight Ends," slink through unearthly soundscapes; some, like the itchy title track, ride an odd time signature into uncharted territory for the band. There's a lot here for fans new and old alike to savor.

This brilliant album came out last Friday but thanks to Amazon Prime I got it Thursday and I couldn't be more amazed. I haven't listened to a new album over and over and over like I have with this one in a long time. I love all Wilco albums but I do believe they have been in an ever so slight slump in recent years where the records, and Jeff's solo albums, have sort of sounded the same; very acoustic and strummy, maybe a bit less adventurous, and having a too common use of echo on Jeff's vocals. Cousin is a return to form, giving us that atmospheric and experimental sound that they are known for, yet it's no repeat of what they've done previously. The songs Ten Dead and Levee are right up there with Jesus Etc. and Impossible Germany. I think it's their best since The Whole Love. Highly recommended.

Jeff Tweedy is our most relevant living artist. Having said that, I feel like Schmilco, Ode To Joy, and Cruel Country were more in the Warm/Warmer/Love Is King Tweedy vein. I wonder if Jeff felt like that, too. After all, when you have the best band in the world, you should let them out to PLAY. This record feels like a Star Wars sequel. My favorite Wilco in a decade. Reportedly, this album was made prior to Cruel Country but Jeff had another spurt of creativity that became Cruel Country and decision was made to release that album first (ala the Beatles with Let it Be and Abbey Road). I love Cruel Country but Cousin has left me in awe. It is an amazing artistic triumph! I've been a huge fan since Being There and all of the Wilco catalog has it's individual songs that are classics but the entire Cousin album is a true masterpiece!
