Robert Song’s Covenant and Calling is one of the rare gay-affirming theological arguments written with a more traditionalist hermeneutic (the other being James Brownson’s book Bible, Gender, Sexuality). That is, Song has a high regard for Scripture and seeks to understand its original intent before considering reasonable extrapolations. He also focuses on the crux of the debate: the significance of sexual differentiation. For these reasons, he offers perspectives worthy of consideration whether or not one ultimately agrees with his conclusions.

Key points of Song's argument:

1. The advent of Christ affects the way we think theologically about sexuality. Certainly, marriage is a created good. But, whereas Genesis says to be fruitful and multiply with an emphasis on procreation, Jesus and the first Christians championed celibacy as the sexuality that represented the eschaton. Where there is no longer any death, marriage and procreation are no longer necessary (per Luke 20:34-6). The promise to Abraham was descendants as numerous as the sand. The promise after Christ is eternal life, and therefore, biological children are no longer necessary to perpetuate humanity or the people of God. The children of God are the ones who do the will of God.

2. The Genesis portrayal of the people reflecting the image of God is as rulers who subdue the earth, which is only possible through procreation. In Christ, the way we reflect the image of God is not contingent on reproducing to subdue the earth. We can image God without marriage and procreation (Song doesn't mention this but the NT focuses on human beings being seated on the throne with Christ and ruling in the heavenlies--Eph 2:6)

3. The primary issue is not heterosexual vs. homosexual, but procreative vs.
