Whether because of a creative impasse or a return to her club roots, Shawn Colvin opted to pass some of the time between her breakthrough Steady On and later, more mature efforts with this 1994 collection of cover songs. Paging through a latter-day Great American Songbook, Colvin acquits herself well enough on a selection of Bob Dylan, Jimmy Webb, and Tom Waits songs. Less successful are her rewordings of the Police's "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" (Colvin preserves traditional family values by switching the "she" to a "he") and Talking Heads' "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)," neither of which benefit from the stripped-down approach. This is a pleasant enough album for fans, but newcomers are advised to start with Colvin's excellent A Few Small Repairs. --Bill Forman

The first album from Shawn I listened to was Polaroids and I loved that clean John Leventhal production. No falling scaffolding here, every note was well considered and sharp as razors. Now finally I got around to her older albums and "Cover Girl" was a real surprise. She has impeccable taste and here you'll find some outstanding songwriters. But the standout track for me is "Someday", which stems from the pen of one Steve Earle. It's on his first album "Guitar Town". But Shawn's version tacks hard against the wind as she rides out the frustrations of dragging her heels in a one horse town with nothing but four-star and the odd tequila to pass the time with before she lowers that sleek, black 67 Chevy down onto the interstate and the woman behind the wheel is gone for good in a cloud of dry country dust looking for what's beyond that rainbow. Magical. Well worth collecting again.

A collection of songs performed by Shawn Colvin, but written by other musicians. I generally like this sort of work. The performer chooses pieces that have touched her, and the emotion just pours right out. I can't say that I love every track, but I enjoy listening to this recording all the way through, even so. Ms Colvin's attachment to these songs is obvious, and some of her interpretations are quite original.

I bought the CD from Amazon. The product page for the CD states "CD-R Note: This product is manufactured on demand when ordered from Amazon.com." Perhaps the liner notes are also manufactured on demand. From an inkjet printer, maybe? My liner notes arrived all stuck together. When I unfolded them, they more or less tore themselves to pieces. Disappointing, that.

I like Shawn Colvin's music a lot, but much prefer just her with her guitar. It's really about personal taste. I consider this album, like others in the top 40 arena, unnecessarily over-produced. Others won't agree. I much prefer her "Uncovered" album and her "Live 88" album. I listen to those 2 a lot; this one, not so much.

In diesen Tagen ist Shawn Colvin gleich mit mehreren Alben Dauergast in meinem CD-Player. Vornan steht das brandneue Album „Cole & Earle“, dann ist da natürlich ihr persönlich neuestes Werk „Uncovered“. Hierdurch inspiriert legte ich mir auch noch das 1994-iger Werk „Cover girl“ zu. Wenngleich die 60zig jährige aus South Dakota stammende Künstlerin zweimal covert, so liegen immerhin neun CDs und 22 Jahre zwischen den Werken. Gleichwohl stelle ich zu früheren Jahren weder einen substanziellen Zugewinn oder ein Nachlassen fest. Von „Uncovered“ war und bin ich nach wie vor begeistert. Zu „Cover girl“ war ich bereit, kleinere Abstriche zu machen, da ich auch Shawn Colvin einräumen wollte, dass sie mit den Jahren reifer, erfahrener und vielleicht auch professioneller geworden ist. Fehlanzeige, diese Bonuskarte musste sie gar nicht ziehen. Von Beginn zog sie mich schnell wieder in ihren Bann. Bereits Stings Opener „Every little thing (he) does is magic“, leider habe ich den Song von Sting nur in einer Live-Fassung (dies wird sich allerdings ändern), interpretiert Shawn Colvin auf ihre ganz persönliche Art. Dabei gibt sie dem Song einen neuen, äußerst raffinierten Touch. Als Nicht-Sting-Fan bin ich vom Song, dessen Interpretation und Ausdruck mehr als begeistert. Wende ich mich nun noch zwei weiteren Liedern zu, bei denen ich von mir behaupten kann, dass ich mich zu dem Fankreis der Komponisten zählen darf. Da ist Tom Waits, dessen Werke ich liebe. Äußerst kritische sehe ich die Coverversionen, wohlwissend, dass Waits ohne Coverversionen nicht den Bekanntheitsgrad hätte, den er mittlerweile genießt. Als kleine Randnotiz möchte ich an dieser Stelle anmerken, dass die Kölner Band „Piano has been Drinking“ mit ihrem Erstlingswerk, ausschließlich Waits-Coverversionen, 1990 ein Highlight setzte. Zurück zu Colvin; sie gibt auch „Heart of a Saturday night“, eine sehr persönliche und individuelle Note. „OL'55“ wird zudem sehr akzentuiert mit Klavier instrumentiert. Colvin sang diese beiden Waits- Songs im zarten Alter von 38 Jahren. Dafür ist die Stimme sehr ausdrucksstark, intensiv und beeindruckend. Meine Begeisterung kennt auch keine Grenzen beim Cover des Großmeisters „You're gonna make me lonesome when you go“. Wieder gelingt es Colvin, sich von Dylans Vorlage zu lösen und ihrem Ego freien Lauf zu lassen. Das Ergebnis ist hörens- und ebenfalls bemerkenswert. Dies sind übrigens die sämtlichen anderen Songs allerdings auch.
Ehrlich, bei der immensen Vielzahl an Coverwerken die der LP- und CD-Markt aktuelle hergibt, fallen die beiden Colvin-CDs „Cover girl“ aus dem Jahre 1994 und das aktuelle Werk „Uncovered“ positiv aus dem Rahmen.

Also track #8 repeats due to a scratch. (I checked the disk on another player and the Repeat is in exactly the same place of track 8. Upon examination I see lots of scratches on this disk. Disappointed.
