This year marks the 10th Anniversary of Brandi Carlile's breakthrough album The Story. To celebrate she recruited artists like Dolly Parton, Kris Kristofferson, Pearl Jam, The Avett Brothers, Adele and many more for this Cover Stories album to benefit the charity War Child.
Brandi describes this project as "...a David and Goliath story. Since becoming a mother, the reality of a child s beautiful little life being torn apart by war felt like too big of a problem for me. So I asked my heroes and friends to help me launch a rock at the giant that is our refugee crisis and help in the only way we know how, through the power of music."

As a longtime Brandi fan, the highlights for me were Dolly's rendition of The Story and Margo Price's Downpour. It's hard to top Brandi's original versions, but Price's Downpour has been on repeat for the past 2 days. Brandi's lyrics never get old to me. "In a crowded room, I'm alone." Turpentine is also one of my favorite Brandi songs, and unfortunately, it is my least favorite version on this album by Kris Kristofferson.
I would also recommend you buy the actual cd because the liner notes are very powerful. There is an opening quote from Barack Obama (also a Brandi fan) and comments from each artist about why they decided to be a part of this album.
If you're new to Brandi, buy every album out there including this one. And make sure to catch her live in concert. Her voice will move you to tears, and her energy on stage will remind you why you love music in the first place.
Form: I expected a download, I got a download. Tracks play perfectly. Sound quality is good. The fact that all proceeds go to an amazing charity just makes me love Brandi more.
Content: I have loved Brandi Carlile since before she was a thing. She is just the greatest. The. Greatest. I was looking forward to hearing some of these super famous people play with her music and discover new things. Mostly though? NO FUN AT ALL. Honestly, most of the tracks on here are so draggy and sad (like Until I Die needed to be sadder?!), except for the ones that are not-as-good exact replicas (Adele's voice is great and all but she might as well be doing karaoke for Hiding My Heart). I don't get it.
The two songs I do like and have in rotation now are the Avett Bros. Have You Ever, which is just sweet, and Pearl Jam's genuinely different and very Pearl Jammy take on Again Today.
On any album like this you are going to have favorites and non-favorites. For me the only real clinkers here are the covers by Jim James (who turns the lovely song "Wasted" into a self-indulgent effects trip) and the track by the Indigo Girls, which seems to have been recorded on a bad day or something. Every other track is a keeper, with Anderson East's soulful take on "Josephine" and Kris Kristofferson's heartbreaking version of "Turpentine" special favorites.
The result is a tribute to Ms. Carlile's compassion and the strength of these songs, which prove able to stand up through all the different styles and voices and still remain a cohesive whole. Anyone who enjoys the original album, any of the artists here, or supporting an excellent cause should buy this.
