A meticulous work of exegesis has all the drama and conspiracy of a journalistic exposé. Goudge [uncovers] a "2000-year conspiracy of silence" designed to "keep the history of Jesus' Jewish heirs plunged in darkness." The ancient tug of war is between Jesus' Judaic mission and Paul's tortured gentile interpretation. Paul disfigures Jesus' intention which drives a schism between Judaism and Christianity.
A fascinating study for anyone interested in the history of the Christian church and willing to roll up their sleeves for some fastidious scholarly analysis. Kirkus Reviews.
From the Author
I had a very difficult life with many struggles with my spirituality and sexuality. In the 1980s, these became so severe that I had bouts of insanity. Then I had a dream of standing on the edge of a trench while workmen were filling it up. I realized that it had once been an abyss. On awakening, I realized that abyss was my depression. But I knew also that the workmen were my psychic recourses which I would have to draw upon and work with. Inspired by a women who exploded as Paul's remark that women should be silent in church: if there was anything they didn't understand, they should ask their husbands when they got home, I began to question whether Paul could condemn me to this hell. The result was the research (24 years of it) that resulted in this book. I am the Nazarenes, longing for a world of justice.

Behind the scholarly details of Lawrence Goudge's book is the great motive of bringing readers back to the meaning of Jesus, who, on the cross embodied God's love for humanity. The traditional (Paul's) interpretation of Jesus's life and crucifixion - that God became human and sacrificed his son to save sinners from eternal punishment - belittles the immensity of those events and their true meaning, simply that God is love and we are to love one another - however difficult that is for us, as we have discovered over the centuries.
Lawrence Goudge has done all of us history buffs a huge favor by doing such an excellent job of research and reconstructing a history that has been lost, stolen, and strayed! By digging into its most obscure corners, he's discovered a fascinating and hidden history.
His book covers two millennia and stretches from India to the New World so while the research is prodigious, the result is extremely readable. Highly recommended.
