As for the fact that these can be frightening to birds with people gawking at them, it's true, and its all about using common sense with them. There will always be some folks that never have much luck getting any brave birds to try the bird house, but I believe most will, as I and my Mom did. When they first discover it and are building the nest, try using the same tactics one uses to get a bird to eat out of your hand. Don't rush into it, but earn the birds trust gradually. Approach them cautiously and from a distance at first. They will get used to you as you approach closer and stay longer and eventually feel safe with it. Also, if you have kids, teach them to not get too close and definitely not knock on the glass and put their hands all over it. The adult birds have choices as to stay and weather the fear of people up close and personal. The babies don't, they will just be fearful all the time if the observing them comes to be offensive, and that is downright cruel. Lastly, one word of real caution. In the commercial for these things they show a cat looking at the box through the window without much in the way of interest. Not so at all. I have a cat and trust me when I tell you that she finds the birds coming and goings to be fascinating. At first she swatted and was all over the glass constantly, terrifying babies and adults alike. I finally moved them to a place where she couldn't get to the window and now everything is fine. If you have a cat and are interested in one of these, trust me that you will either have to keep it in a window the cat can't get at, or, keep the cat out of the room altogether where its located. With very little exception, any cat will thoroughly squash the whole idea of any bird deciding to make a home out of your generosity, trust me...
In conclusion, they really do work, but expensive to be sure. Try making your own, it's very easy. And whether you buy them here or make your own, heed my advice on observing them, and especially in regards to cats. Good luck and enjoy... : )
Can't tell if she has laid her eggs yet but we are keeping a close watch for little chicks soon.
This particular window box is sturdier than others on the market such as http://www.amazon.com/Songbird-Essentials-SESC78162-Nest-House/dp/B001BOACMU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1336155119&sr=8-2. Note the location of the suction cups. The Coveside Window box cups are located on the sides of the house to prevent flexing while mounting.
