This book of brief essays methodically examines the major Covid-19 issues masks, social distancing, natural immune systems, treatments to determine what is fact and what is myth in the current intensely political debate. The book is written by a family physician who pointedly differs on the threat posed by Covid-19 to the American people, then challenges current conventional wisdom on what should be done about the schools, the economy and public activity with reason, honesty and scientific findings.

Review
Talk about politically incorrect! Great collection of eye-opening, thought-provoking essays. --Larry Elder, Nationally Syndicated Radio Talk Show Host
The author of the book, Covid-19 A Physician s Take On The Exaggerated Fear Of The Coronavirus is certainly not scared of expressing controversial views that are protected by America s long-standing tradition of freedom of speech. Dr Barke s book supports the idea that medical doctors have to calibrate the public interest of living in a real world of risk, danger, and opportunity with fundamental questions of a patient s health and safety. Dr Barke believes that the US government and many scientists and medical doctors being interviewed on television are being overly cautious on how the coronavirus should be dealt with. For example, Dr Barke does not hesitate to question the silence of other medical professionals over the need to have people build their natural immune systems as a defence against the coronavirus. And he spends a good number of pages of his book questioning the effectiveness of facemasks as a protection against the spread of Covid-19. He then makes this highly telling point: A 0.12 micron Covid-19 virus particle will pass through an ordinary surgical mask easily as well as any homemade [face-covering] cloth product. It is the equivalent of erecting a chain-link fence to keep out mosquitoes. This makes the protections that masks provide dubious. I felt like I had made a major discovery about the limits of the protectiveness of a facemask against Covid-19. It is one of several revelations by Dr Barke in his book that are worth considering. They are also worth sharing. The reference he makes to social distancing comparing the distances recommended in Africa and the U.S. makes interesting reading. . . . if I m six feet away from another person, am I safe? he asks. Then adds tellingly: The Europeans and Africans maintain a metre (about three feet) of separation. But why not four feet or eight feet? Because six feet was thought to be an easily remembered and calibrated number. But there is zero science for any amount of social distancing that we have been led to believe is an untouchable element of the defence against the coronavirus. My overall view is that Dr Barke presents a calming approach to an over-panicked global reaction towards managing or containing the coronavirus that it knows little about and must learn more about to save human lives. Modern society has gone overboard with deploying bacterial soaps, lotions and cleaning products, argues Dr Barke. They indiscriminately kill germs, yes, but they also wipe out the good bacteria that help maintain a strong and diverse microbiome against potential diseases. Reading the book, one gets the sense that there are some commercial forces that might be pushing scientists, the media and politicians toward solutions of containing the virus through expensive methods involving costly (and highly profitable) vaccines, sanitizers, cleaners, etc. Missing significantly, in the campaign to defeat Covid-19, are discussions to do with eating healthy and taking vitamin tablets that Dr Barke recommends. To me, Dr Barke comes across in the book as someone who is proposing simpler and cheaper solutions towards containing Covid-19. While I am optimistic that a vaccine is on the way, I even wonder if we will ever get one that is affordable to all peoples worldwide. This 72-page book is a must-read for everyone in positions of responsibility for ensuring the good health of others and avoiding unnecessary loss of life during the Covid-19 pandemic. --Emmanuel Koro, Johannesburg-based journalist covering environmental and development issues in Africa.
In this short, powerful collection of essays, a physician and local leader in Orange County, California, offers his reality check to the standard mainstream government and media messaging about the COVID-19 pandemic. His position is that absurd, over-reactive government and societal responses to the coronavirus, like school and business closures, have destroyed common sense, threatened the healthy exchange of germs, and sucker-punched economic norms. He posits that COVID-19 only presents flu-like symptoms in relatively healthy people under age 65. Those at risk should stay home, and the rest of the American population, including and especially kids, should get back to mask-free school, work, and everyday life. Dr. Barke s provocative assertions are delivered with a clear readable language that a layperson can understand and follow. His observations are timely in a dynamic situation, and his succinct chapters are well-written and persuasive with their authoritative voice and confident stance. His dual backgrounds in medicine and school oversight lend weight to his opinions. Some readers may, at times, seek additional substantiation to the book s more noteworthy claims. The statement, for example, that COVID-19 is cured by a cocktail of easily attainable and known remedies is delivered with anecdotal reference to a successful physician but without the typical trappings of cited studies and scientific references. Still, hunger by many readers for information on this topic is undoubtedly vast, and this book of intriguing medical and sociological commentary reads like a page-turner. It is a compelling and optimistic assessment that offers thought-provoking alternatives to what may otherwise be accepted by some as inarguable truths. --U.S. Review of Books

- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2024Written very well. Good price.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2021I heard Dr. Barke on a radio interview. He was fascinating, and has a common sense view of COVID 19, masks, and the vaccine. I can’t wait to read his book for more details. I gave the book 5 stars based on the radio interview. I agree with Dr. Barke on his assessment of Dr. Fauci - Dr. Fauci needs to retire and give us a break from his double-speak.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2021Just listened to a radio interview with Mark Larson in San Diego, in which he seeks to cast doubt on the severity of Covid by, among other things, calling into question the Flu numbers.
He quotes the CDC statement that Flu is extraordinarily low, which is correct. But, he then began to opine on the reasons and surmised that "maybe they aren't testing for it." Well, scrolling down on the CDC website shows the testing that has been done and, whaddya know? The flu is virtually non-existent. Testing is happening and, just as was the case in the Southern Hemisphere, there is virtually no flu this year.
If he skips, misses, or omits something that easily verifiable...I'd stay away from anything else he has to say.
Oh, and it makes perfect sense that this has happened.
1. Travel has been curtailed...flu didn't move as readily from the Southern Hemisphere to other parts of the world.
2. More attention to flu vaccinations.
3. Covid is more contagious, so the mitigation factors for flu aren't strong as effective against Covid.
4. Viral competition. Plenty of studies exist to show that there is the potential for one virus to, essentially, crowd out another virus.
Don't waste you time on anything this guy has to say.
