As a teacher and mother of two, I owned a large collection of children activity books and was extremely pleased with my purchase of "And the Cow Jumped Over the Moon". Each featured rhyme or song is grouped with Related Songs, Chants and Rhymes, Follow Up Questions to promote discussion, Language Enrichment Ideas, Extension Activities, and Outdoor Play or Music and Movement Activities. All activities are themed to go with the featured rhyme. Not only are several creative activities given, but you can also use them as a spring board for other activities of your own. Whether you are having a day of themed activities at home to brighten a Monday afternoon, or a Day Care Provider who is trying to create a fun classroom curriculum, this book is a wonderful resource. The activities are easy to do, appropriate for young toddlers, and physical, emotional, or cognitive development skills are clearly identified. Pam Schiller and Thomas Moore's other book "Where is Thumbkin" is similarly designed, but specifically geared for older children (4-6).

It's got a lot of songs in there, but I'd like to suggest 3 improvements:
1) Drawings of the physical activities like "head, shoulders, knees and toes," which can be easily followed when working with kids. The book is nearly all just TEXT with very little illustration. Hard to use as a reference when you're actually DOING these activities.
2) Include a CD so we can hear the tunes.
3) A spiral binding would allow us to keep it open on the floor when we're with the toddlers.

I bought this for an early childhood classroom. It is more a collection of rhymes & songs than actual teaching ideas. It would be better if a CD of tunes had been included. (There are some teaching ideas included, but really the bulk of this is lyrics.)

A wonderful resource for newbies like me! I've found the lyrics (and motions that go with them) to songs I've wanted to learn but never had time -- like Ram Sam Sam and The Grand Old Duke of York. As making motions during songs reinforces the meaning of the words -- this book is a wonderful early literacy tool. Also, Pam Schiller has done music, too! She has written new lyrics to familiar tunes for kid-friendly subjects like her song Bugs, Bugs, Bugs to the tune of She'll be Coming Round the Mountain. You can easily create a summer insect theme around this one! Look for music by Schiller Educational Resources as well as searching under Pam Schiller. I found the CD a few years back at the library.

This book is great if you are a teacher of toddlers/2s. Simple, fun ideas. The children love the rhymes and the teachers love the extensions that go with the rhymes.
