Before newlywed Kim Reed-Williams has time to adjust to her married woman status, surf loving beach boy husband, and luxury honeymoon suite, the two find themselves immersed in a murder mystery on Christmas Eve. Santa Claus is dead but the challenge is to figure out which of the multitude of Santas hired by the hotel to make Christmas special for all the kiddie guests is missing.
The investigation and fun begin as Brien and Kim insist on helping Detective Mitchum, the real detective and not one of those security dudes (per Brien), solve the crime that threatens to ruin their honeymoon.
Fortunately, despite the investigation of a murder and their efforts to assist, Kim and Brien find enough down time for some cowabunga surfing, wining and dining and honeymoon suite escapades to make this a delightful holiday read. There's just enough intrigue and quirky twists and turns to keep you guessing as to who committed the murder, how and why.
I highly recommend this book to kick off your holiday season!
If you’ve already had the pleasure of “meeting” its main characters in the Jessica Huntington series, you’ll be especially amused (and bemused) by this odd pairing. When first introduced in A Dead Sister (Jessica Huntington Desert Cities Mystery) (Volume 2), Kim was a darkly brooding, angry, and despairing young woman trapped in an abusive relationship. In contrast, Brien is an outgoing, energetic surfer dude. While Kim is intelligent and street smart, Brien strikes most people as somewhat stupid because of his naïve, unfiltered questions and malapropisms. But opposites attract, as the saying goes, and what’s more, the couple’s complementary natures bring out the best in each other. Brien can pull Kim out of her dark moods in a heartbeat, and help her have fun. Kim nurtures Brien’s hidden depths, seeing his questions as a thirst for knowledge and his malapropisms as a courageous determination to master new vocabulary. Even as she corrects his words, she's proud of him.
Anna Celeste Burke is known for this type of writing, which can be enjoyed on many levels. You can breeze through her books as exciting page-turners and then go back to re-read them, appreciating how intelligently crafted and well-researched they are. The settings are interesting and beautifully described.
Best wishes to this loveable couple! May they continue to grow and share many new adventures with us!

OK, OK, I'll be honest. It's been a few years since I thought about surfing. A LOT MORE THAN "a few". Never thought I'd be reading a surfing mystery at my age. You know what? I loved it. Kim and Brien are on their honeymoon, sneak into the pool area after closing, and become involved in a murder. Throw in a bunch of Santas, surfers, and maybe even a treasure, and Anna Celeste Burke has you hooked from chapter one. The characters are vivid and the plot well conceived. I read it in one evening. I highly recommend. I was given a copy of this book for my honest reveiw
