Like his previous Cowboy Ceilidh , he frequently keeps his mandolin somewhat in the background and lets the others shine... and they do shine. I liked `The Trail to Mexico/In the Tap Room/The Banshee' with Willkie's mandolin and Jeremiah McDade's tin whistle. They carry the three tunes with that special sound that makes Cowboy Celtic memorable.
`Little Joe the Wrangler' starts out with fiddle and banjo and meets up with tin whistle and Uillean pipes and bodhran and it's really catchy. `Garry Owen/Custer Died a Runnin'/Off `Til Monday' was just okay - `Gary Owen' itself was no more than a few bars and the Custer satire vocal (all played to the tune of the Garryowen) I thought was a tad on the impertinent side. The traditional `Colorado Trail' was beautifully done with Willkie's mandolin and Jeremiah McDade's tin whistle. `Goodby Old Paint/Leavin' Cheyenne/The Strawberry Roan/Git Along Little Dogies' all done traditionally and the mandolin, guitar, fiddle, and whistle make it special. `The Girl I Left Behind Me' started slowly, but was almost lyrical and picked up steam - I never heard it played quite like this. The Celtic harp and bodhran were wonderful.
Every cut on the CD is worth hearing and enjoying and I only listed some of the tunes I really liked. If you listen to the album you may think otherwise and why not? Your mileage may vary.
The album is worth buying.
It's a wonderful combination of Irish, country folk, & Mexican folk. I love it :)
I rock my 20 month old son to sleep every night, and this has given me a chance to listen to my music collection as I rock--which I otherwise wouldn't have time for. My son seems to enjoy this music as much as I do.
I would say that this is closer to Bluegrass and Folk or even New Age than it is to Country or the Scotch/Irish ballad tradition. If you like early Clannad or Rare Air for example, I think you'd like this. But if you prefer the Chieftains, then maybe not.
