Cowboy Christmas Guardian’s storyline surrounds Barrett Thorn and Shelby Arroyo, but for me “Forgiveness” was the main character.
Barrett Thorn’s life and that of his family was shattered by a tragic accident 4 years ago. Cowboy Christmas Guardian begins as the Thorn family continues grieving, but the family is also trying to stop putting Christmas aside like they had done since the accident. After the accident the Thorn family buried themselves in taking care of their large ranch, “The Gold Bar Ranch”, thinking hard work will help them shield the pain, especially Barrett.
As Barrett finds out, the hard work doesn’t help enough and the bitterness has hardened his heart. Each of Thorn family members have their own way of dealing with the family tragedy including looking to their faith. But the Thorn family’s faith is tested on the arrival of Shelby Arroyo.
Shelby has come to the Gold Country to help her Uncle Ken, who is like the father she never really had. Shelby soon learns that the tragedy that shattered the Thorn family had also shattered her own family, connecting the two families forever.
Shelby wants to survey a mine that her Uncle Ken has mineral rights too, but the mine isn’t on land Uncle Ken’s owns. Knowing that her uncle is having financial problems, Shelby is driven to take some risk. These risks could cost Shelby not only her life but that of Barrett’s. The risks Shelby is taking are becoming more dangerous, because someone is trying to stop Shelby from surveying the mine, at any cost, even murder.
Read Cowboy Christmas Guardian and be reminded how a strong family working together can overcome bitterness and forgive those that caused a tragedy and to help the healing process of themselves.
Forgiveness is year-round, but during the holidays forgiveness becomes the most powerful.
Cowboy Christmas Guardian reminded me to be thankful for what I have, to accept the things that I can’t change and that not being able to move past something will destroy me.
Thank you, Dana, for reminding me that at times I can’t always do things on my own.
Shelby Arroyo has come to Gold Bar to assess the mineral rights of the mine. Her uncle has fallen on hard times, and she wants to do whatever she can to help him. She didn't count on running into a mystery that results in numerous attempts on her life. She also didn't count on running into cowboy Barrett Thorn.
Barrett finds himself attracted to Shelby until he learns that she is related to the man who caused the accident that killed his wife. Barrett wants to have nothing to do with Shelby or her uncle, but honorable man that he is, he can't leave Shelby unprotected. He risks his own life to keep her safe. Soon Barrett and Shelby find themselves not only fighting their mutual attraction, but also fighting to stay alive.
With Christmas only a few days away, will Barrett and Shelby discover the secret of the mine before the holiday? Even more important, will they be alive to celebrate?
Cowboy Christmas Guardian is the first novel in Dana Mentink's new Gold Country Cowboys series. True to Dana's form, the book throws you into the action on page one and keeps you hooked. You'll feel the characters' pain and be a part of their struggle to resolve their differences. Once again Dana Mentink has written a fast-paced novel filled with suspense, romance, and inspiration. Thumps up, Dana--another five-star novel.
This story captured my attention from the very beginning. The opening scene creates the tone for the rest of the story with a dark, stormy night full of danger for Shelby Arroyo, the leading lady of the story. This woman can manage to get herself into a lot of dangerous situations and it's a good thing she has Barrett Thorn there to rescue her. Barrett may come across as a brooding cowboy but there is so much more to him. Oh, and I absolutely adored Evie Thorn, the matriarch of the Thorn family! Is it possible for her to adopt me?
Reading this story it's hard to believe that it's written by a third grade teacher who is mom to Junie the dog and posts funny videos on social media. This book is dark, mysterious, and so good. It really shows her ability as an author to write a wide range of stories. I enjoy the fact that she can make me laugh or, in this case, keep me on the edge of my seat and turning pages long into the afternoon or night.
This is a book you don't want to miss out on reading. I'm already anxious to read the next book in the series and see what's in store next for the Thorn family. This is one for the keeper shelf.
I received a free copy of this book and was not required to write a review. All opinions are mine.
