The story is expertly paced, vibrant and heartwarming, with a beautiful HEA that leaves the reader longing to move to Chance Creek. As the first in a series, this story also introduces several of the other characters that are featured in subsequent books.
Cora Seton knows how to write a wonderful romance. If you haven't read any of her military romance books, I would encourage everyone to read those as well. They are excellent as well.
Vegan chef Sunshine Patterson has been bequeathed a restaurant in small town Chance Creek by her aunt Cecily. Since her ex stole everything she had in savings when she helped him out with his up and coming restaurant and then dumped her this is her only shot at seeing her dream of owning her own establishment come true. But when she arrives at the location she is certain there must be some kind of mistake. The building currently houses a shooting range. And if that isn't enough, things are about to get even more crazy when she finds out what all her aunt's will involves.
Cole Linden took over his father's shooting range a while back and is just making ends meet. With his also owning the two apartment buildings behind the business and knowing most of the tenants are on a fixed income he hasn't been able to raise the rents to market value for fear of putting most of them out on the streets. He's barely staying afloat now and finding out his sweet friend and landlord passed away leaving a strange bequeath to him and her niece has him worried about what the future holds. When he meets Sunshine for the first time something stirs deep inside him but he must ignore it. The game is on now to see who will win the game Cecily conjured up and who will lose everything. Cole knows so many more people will lose if he loses. Sunshine knows that she will be left with nothing if she loses. Who will win this battle and is it possible both could lose so much more than they imagine?
Besides the obvious previously mentioned reasons this book fell flat it seemed the entire town and outlying ranches involved a whopping population of about 10-15 people. Deeper story development was needed to get me pulled in. Having previously read some of the other books that follow in this series I have to say they do get much better.
