The Cowboy Kiss is about a Travel Blogger named Autumn (beautiful name by the way I loved it!) who is contacted by her mother to come back home and get some hype for the families little resort type thing. What she doesn't know though is that this is just her families ploy to get her to fall in love with her old friend Cory.
I really connected with Autumn because she is a blogger just as I am. She may not be a book blogger but we are all bloggers just the same. She was a very straight forward character you were never left guessing what her feelings about situations were which I like in a story. Cory on the other hand when we first met him I wasn't sure what his feelings toward Autumn and here being home were, but I suppose that about his character was good because it balanced the two out.
In the end this short story really drew me in and I'm extremely excited about picking up James' other books in the near future!
I had one problem with the story, and given that the story is so short, I think it is a central issue to the storyline- why was Autumn avoiding home? There is never an explanation given for why Autumn had to be manipulated into coming for a visit. She's a travel writer, so there was no reason her travels couldn't take her by her family home once in a while. Cory had no problem being there, even if he had to deal with the death of a parent. If they were such great friends and inseparable until she left for college, what's the problem?
Overall, the story is well written and well edited. It is a clean read, with only kissing, no sexual situations. It leaves the reader with the promise of a HEA, as a good romance story should, but I had to mark off stars because I felt that the plot aspect was lacking. (Wow, I think my review may be half the length of the story! : P )
Heat factor mild.
I enjoyed the northwest outdoors setting. I would have liked to have seen more of that in the story. The family elements were nice as well.
It won't be a very memorable read for me though. So perhaps my rating falls closer to 3.5. Not much happened. I wish the author had given me more back story as well. I think I would have felt the impact of Autumn and Cory's love more had the story opened with detail from their youth together. She mentioned they teased each other, mentioned they spent a lot of time together - but didn't provide many examples of that time. The description mentions arch enemies... the story never gave me evidence of that.
But - it was a nice story. There wasn't anything wrong with it. Just OK - nice, fine, sweet.
