Pros:
- Construction: I assumed from the price and pictures that the softbox was constructed from vinyl. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised to discover the exterior was made of thick rip-stop nylon. So far it has held up well to folding and general use. I haven't noticed any deformation or loose threads. Finally, contrary to some other reviews, the ball head on my softbox is rock solid when tightened down. I have fairly strong hands, but when I tested it, I couldn't so much as get it to budge. It is possible that there was an isolated problem with the first run, but if so, it appears to have been resolved.
- Price: This is a similar product to the Lastolite Ezybox. Given the large price difference and how well this softbox has performed, I can't see a good reason to go that route. This is only
- Quality of Light: A small softbox will add a lot of variety if you usually shoot with umbrellas. It is a slightly harder light source, similar to a beauty dish. More importantly, it is a more directional source than an umbrella, which really helps with spill control. This portrait was taken inside a standard white office and would have been hard to accomplish with an umbrella: [...]
Cons:
- Documentation: There is no literature included explaining how to fold it. So once you've unfolded it, you've more or less opened Pandora's Box. For those struggling, it folds in an identical manner to the aforementioned Lastolite Ezybox, and there are several youtube videos explaining how to fold that product. Once you've done it once or twice it's really simple, but they did somewhat drop the ball in this respect.
Overall, this is a very well made, versatile product that I would recommend without hesitation. It certainly made me want to buy again from this company. Provided you're willing to track down the folding instructions for yourself, it's hard to go wrong at this price.
Cost versus benifit, well worth it. Might look into different mounting hardware but am unclear based upon previous reviewer how to make that work.
Follow up what works. Change out the included cold mount, as the screw bottoms out against the flash head and can cause all sort of unknowns so use the Stroboform cold mount then change out the locking nut for the 1/4x20 Camera screw from B&H Photo HAS35. This will give you the clearance you need to bring the flash head closer into the softbox to make it all work with TTL5 unit. Yes, I know a lot of messing around but once started down the path after a purchase, you do what you need to to do to make it work. Still very satisfied with the softbox just the TTL5 is a large transciever so adjustments must be made. Looked at alternatives but nothing guaranteed. This works !!
Update 12/01/12
As my photograpy and experience has progressed I have found that basically cheaping out up front, you will pay later for. That has been my experience with these. As entry level these are fine but after you have using for a while you begin to see the limits. So bottom line I upgraded to the Lastolite LL LS2462JM Joe McNally 24-Inch Satin EzyboxHotshoe http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004TB0JI4/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00. Yes is huge step in cost but my images are huge step forward. If you decide to go with the Lastolite, I would at this point still recommend the Stoboform Cold Mount. Still playing with so more to follow.
I began the return process. Amazon has one of the most amazing return processes ever. I was 100% satisfied with that deal. However, when the product was replaced (the overnighted it on their own. Bravo!)i found it was the same item but different in several ways. The replacement ball head & flash mount was a lot less robust and prone to creeping with little weight on it. The original was rock solid and about 30 percent more substantial. The replacement soft box itself was a bit nicer with a few features the first one did not have. Both have proven to be a real struggle to fold up and slip into the tiny zippered bag included. I store mine flat. The carry case was similar but the original had screen printed words on it and the other was bare.
The soft box works as I need it to work...quite well actually. And i would order another, but I am afraid to roll the dice and get that cheaper ball head unit again. I may go for one of the more costly options. But this item, coupled with the Ravelli 10ft light stand, is perfectly functional. Those stands are the one of the best values in the photo category and no, i do not work for ravelli. I'm just a ambitious amatuer trying to get the best for the least.
