Do I review the first kit or the replacement? First one had a stand with a defective latch for the extension pole, the latch for both tall stands was basackward design poorly put together. The locking levers on the tall stands was almost unmovable, with the hinge pin of one in crooked. The replacement (same kit) had larger latch levers that worked smoothly. First kit shipped had an umbrella with the material not attached to one of the ribs so material sagged (missed sewing that one). Replacements were different material and had a round plastic tip on the end of the umbrella not on the first kits umbrellas.
First Con - the items are not consistent from one order to the next. You don't know that what your getting is what others have given positive reviews. (or negative for that matter)
These are bargain stands, with fairly small bases not going to be very stable with a large umbrella in the 50 or 60 inch range. The main use I have for lights is to shoot groups, large umbrellas are a must as I require even light over large area. However if one was setting up lights for portraits or product shots and working in a smaller area such as a photo booth, home studio in a spare room or corner of the basement the smaller size might be an advantage. If you plan on shooting a wedding these are not the stands you want. Pictures for online sales, or family portraits on the cheap the stands would work ok.
Stands are a toss up. If I had it to do over I would purchase stands separately based on the review of the stands to have better quality. I would have had to spend more money for them.
Pro - The light sockets were all good, had a metal tab that applied spring tension to the umbrella shaft so umbrella was stable, not high quality but all arrived serviceable without socket problems.
Umbrellas - what can I say quality on par with all the other $7 to $9 33 inch umbrellas. I purchased with reflective silver/black because as I mentioned I want as much light as possible over large area, shooting through white umbrella reduces the amount of light, besides I already have white umbrellas. These work for what they are. If doing it again a better investment might have been to purchase individual umbrellas based on the umbrella reviews.
The short stand would make a decent keyhole light or back light stand, latches were better on this stand than on the larger stands. Base is small so don't plan on extending to full height and putting an umbrella on it without stability issues. Which might be why the kit only has two umbrellas.
The lights - mostly con. The people who complained that they are inadequate are being generous. They are NOT the equivalent of 200 watt incandescent, not even close. Range using reflective silver umbrella was approx. 6 feet and maybe 1 shutter speed stop faster worth of light at that range. Again for situations where light can be close they could be useful. I think with a frame of about 8 ft. (such as an 8 ft. backdrop or green screen) and all three lights you could at least get even and fairly decent light. One or two person portrait lighting they would work. Might as well plan on doing what I did and purchasing some decent 85 watt lights, I went with Kazi in 5500k. The one good thing about these 45 watt kit bulbs is they are a pretty good match for the color temperature of my flash units. So I can mix and match without big white balance issues.
On purchasing those 85 watt bulbs those are great big bright beautiful light, 2 shutter stops faster focused 20 ft. away. Those bulbs are huge. When it comes to lights bigger and brighter is what I want.
Don't make the mistake I did of ordering a double light socket, I figured I could use the two 45 watts I replaced with 85 watt bulbs on another stand if I had a double socket. Two small dim bulbs is still just more dim light, not worth it.
Bag is OK - nice enough but not heavy duty.
So why three stars for what on the basis of quality and overall performance sounds like a two star review? First off Amazon was very prompt in sending the replacement kit. Service counts. And because it is a budget kit. You don't buy a Yugo and expect it to be a Honda Civic. At $70 you can expect every part to be budget quality. And within its limitations you could use it to take better studio pictures. A pair of decent 7 ft. stands would run you around $60-$80, those good 85 watt lights are $14.50 each. (totally worth the cost) better umbrellas also cost more.
It does provide a way to get started with controlled 3 point lighting on a budget, as an investment in photography equipment it falls short. If you continue to pursue photography this will end up being replaced sooner rather than later. If you can make do with less "stuff" of better quality consider spending the extra money and shopping for better individual items to build up a good kit over time.
Let me be honest: I've looked at lighting kits for a while. I shoot a lot of review videos. The kind where I just point the camera at myself and talk. While it isn't necessary, I wanted to up the game a little. I was using those octopus style floor lights to light my videos. Each has five outlets, and I bought 10 100w equivalent daylight balanced bulbs. All in all it puts out a fair amount of light (enough to get me 100-400 ISO at f/2.8). They do the job, but you don't really get the soft lighting that you should probably have for the types of videos I shoot. So I had been looking for something a bit better.
I watched a YouTube video review of this particular kit and was intrigued (the video in question is posted in another review here on Amazon). $100 isn't cheap, but at the same time, it's a steal for lights. I know that. So I took the dive and ordered this kit expecting a good balance between lighting and flexibility.
The box (and ENORMOUS box) came two days later. I popped it open to find another box, which inside it had a bag which inside THAT had individual boxes for all the pieces of the kit (Why the need for all the boxes? Normally I would be thrilled, but as you'll find out in a bit, no amount of packaging could save this lemon). I began to carefully unpackage everything and set it off to the side. Now, as others have pointed out, there are no instructions with this. Frankly, they aren't needed. If you can't figure out how to set this up, you probably shouldn't be buying a lighting kit to begin with. It's a dreadfully obvious setup, so I began rigging it all up.
First problem I ran into: the legs wouldn't stay locked. This didn't surprise me though, since, while metal, they are flimsy to say the least. After a bit of fiddling, I got one of them to stay. Then I attached the lighting kit to the top of the stand. Problem two: the lighting apparatus itself is made entirely out of plastic. There are two tension screws which you can loosen to adjust angle and then re-tighten. The dig here is that any little bit of tightening makes it feel as though its going to break in one way or another. Doesn't exactly evoke a wonderful sense of confidence.
Then came the lights themselves, which is the only reason this review gets two stars. The package comes with four 85w CFL bulbs. Not only are these huge, but they run relatively cool and have a surprisingly large light output. Now I will say that these were advertised as 5500K bulbs, but were, in fact, 5000K. No big deal though. Like I said, these bulbs were significant, and the only redeeming part of the whole kit.
Next was the umbrella. To begin, I have used studio umbrellas before. I know what they are and how they work and what they do. These...these are the equivalent of the kinds of umbrellas you find in tropical drinks. They are wafer thin, poorly made, and like many other components in this kit, feel as though they would break after a few uses. The REAL problem with the umbrellas, however, isn't even inherent to the part, per se. When mounting the umbrellas, the sheer weight of them (all two ounces or so) weighs the entire rig down. Meaning, it is nigh-impossible to accurately angle the light reflection in a useful way. Before you say this is user error - it isn't. Trust me. The lighting fixture itself cannot support the weight of the bulbs and the umbrellas. The only way to get it to work is a counter-weight, which is conveniently not in the kit.
All that said and done, I set it up and take some shots with it. It works. Take a few more shots. It falls apart. Literally. The stands (which I mentioned earlier) gave way, and the whole thing fell down about three feet. Luckily there is a small spring in it, or else the bulbs may have broken. The only thing about these lighting kits that is absolutely necessary is that they allow you to accurately angle light where you need it. Well, when its on the floor, it doesn't do that ONE TASK, does it?
I sent this item back. In the notation, I listed it as defective, which is accurate. That said, I didn't request a new one. Why? Because even IF I got a new unit without those flaws, I can't honestly say that I was confident it would last more than a month. The materials and construction themselves are cheap and flawed. You can't fix that. That's something that, every time you use it, you cross your fingers and hope it doesn't collapse. It's $100, and for that, I don't want to worry. You get what you pay for, I know. But I was hoping for functionality and reliability here, and I definitely didn't get that. Save your money. Save it for a while. Then buy a $500 kit that may give you the same light output, but doesn't feel as though a child's breath would break the whole thing.

Considering the price, I expected having something working, but for sure you won't get something as rock solid as pro hardware (which also costs a lot more).
I strongly suggest you try first every piece when you receive the box. In my case I contacted Cowboystudio and Amazon and they know the problem so they were very kind and helpful. They sent me the replacement parts at no charge to avoid sending back the whole package (which is quite big).
