So Danny is a ranch hand, good with horses, and better at bull riding. He is a valued member of Rand's dude ranch crew and when new guests arrive, they bring Laurie into his orbit.
Now everyone has a type that sets them off and Laurie is it for Danny. Tall, slim, long long legs, elegant, and oh so good with horses. Unfortunately Laurie has a current boyfriend. . . The good news is this is NOT a love triangle. This is attraction that can't be acted on and there is no cheating, at least not of the physical kind -- Not from Laurie or Danny. Their relationship takes risk, heart, and resolve. They were perfect for each other even with their differences. And there was enough background from both the rural country ranch life and the high stakes deal making life of an interior decorator. And with those differences there wasn't any wish to change the other, they accepted each other as is. Dirt, mud, sweat, and callouses. Heck, Laurie doesn't even complain about the rat trap Danny drives! Yes they spent a lot of time apart but they were still thinking of the other, constantly. We were in their thoughts and taken along for the ride.
The future is mapped and still left some loose threads to know everything isn't set in stone. Life changes people and with that said the story ended with Laurie and Danny in a good place. Heavily in debt but in a good place together. This is a wonderful story. - Dan's Wife
This book is about Danny, working on a 'guest ranch' in California, working on being content not happy. He's got a cowboy friend with benefits, he works for an out and proud couple, feels like he is part of a family...but longs for a toppy bossy femme presence in his life, and has dreams of school and his own ranch someday...but these basically seem unattainable...far in an imagined future.
Then 'swish',Laurie arrives:
"The baby blue Porsche Spyder convertible came to an abrupt stop in front of the ranch house..... .....Out came a long leg in skin-tight black pants tucked into knee-high boots. What followed forced Danny’s jaw to drop an inch..... ...... he turned his head and stopped, facing Danny. One rose-gold eyebrow rose above the upper rim of the glasses."
Overall, Laurie and Danny were designed for each other by a very benevolent author. But she can't simply smooth the way for them: they have obstacles and challenges, ranging from fiance to greedy boss, bigoted father, Scorpion the bull, potentially incompatible dreams, and 1.5 hr drive from the ranch to San Francisco, where Laurie lives. Hmmm will it all work out?
The book is all about the relationship developing between the two MCs but there are numerous charming and irritating and downright horrific secondary characters. Also, this book has nice detail on the work context for Danny, with the horses and his champion bull riding, the risks and skills and limited payoff. For Laurie, we get less detail, but enough to know he is great at his work as an interior designer. For me, good secondary characters, rich context make for a better romance read.
Recommend. Professional writing, smooth dialogue, professional editing.
Some things I think about when considering an MM book
Sexy scale 1-5:3
These two have explicit mm sex...pretty much immediately, as soon as the obstacles start to fall. I always forget to count, but I think they have sex about three times.
Likable MCs scale 1-5:3
Very likable hard-working guys. Individually, I would say Laurie is more twisted up by his parent situation, that has been holding him back for years. While Danny's trouble appear to be farther in the past...until old enemies step out from the wings.
Humor scale 1-5:2
Friendly banter, two pleasant sexy guys. But not a silly book.
Angst scale 1-5:3
Homophobic attacks attempted rape
Like the sound of Cowboy's Don't Ride Unicorns?
Then I recommend
Tara Lain's Love in Laguna series
Lucy Lennox's Made Marian series (the first three)
NR Walker's Red Dirt Heart series
NR Walker's Sixty Five Hours
Personal history of experiencing homophobic violence; detailed murderous homophobic violence involving both MCs as victims during book; attempted rape of one mc by two guys at gay bar
