It is imperative that you read the first two books in the series, which were deep and full of love but also covered with the patina of the mystery. That Adam reappeared after everyone assumed he was dead in the second book was tantamount to deepening the questions that R.J. Scott had thrown out there. That's because Justin (on the right on the cover) made a brief cameo appearance in that one, unbeknownst to everyone, and in doing so became radicalized by revenge for this plot.
Sam had been fairly prominent in the previous book, but more as a forlorn gay man looking for love without any real opportunities given his position as chef to the Crooked Tree operation. Here the story concentrates on him in the beginning, exposing his fears, hurts and hopes well before Justin appears on the scene. When Justin does appear, it's almost too convenient, but in a way believable. What develops out of that meeting pulls this entire escapade into a well-honed narrative that does not close with satisfaction until near the end.
By that time you will have run out of excuses to be frustrated by the lack of conclusion because the love story begins to make headway. And just when you think the whole thing is wrapped up neatly, the author announces in an afterword that there will be a fourth book in the series. I've already guessed who one of the MCs will be--and will get it as soon as it is published.
Sam attends his grandmother's funeral, but nothing has changed with his family. He is still an outcast for being gay. Back at the ranch, he decides to take his bike out so he can erase the bad mood his family has put him in. Little does he know that the man he runs into, will cause the past, the present, and the future of Crooked Tree Ranch to collide.
I would give it five stars, but this one felt rushed to me. It has all the right things going for it, great characters and a good story line, but I think RJ got this one out faster than she should have. Still a worthy #3 in the series.
