Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A vicious attack on Ervin Benally, the son-in-law of a wealthy and powerful businesswoman, points to deep-seated tensions on a New Mexico Navajo reservation in the Thurlos' solid 14th Ella Clah mystery (after 2007's Turquoise Girl). Benally had recently stirred up controversy with his plans to install StarTalk, a satellite phone system that would allow the Navajos to communicate across miles of sparsely populated reservation land. The interference of the Fierce Ones, a vigilante group known for dishing out swift and sometimes misconceived justice, has Ella Clah of the Navajo Tribal Police wondering exactly where and why their involvement began—or will end. As Ella and her team investigate further, they realize they must uncover the traitor within to solve the larger problems plaguing the community. Despite too many red herrings and wild goose chases, the Thurlos' intimate knowledge of Navajo culture and legends make for another crowd pleaser. (Oct.)

From Booklist

The Thurlos’ Ella Clah series follows the conflicts, compromises, and adventures of a young woman who has been transplanted twice: from the Navajo Res on which she grew up to the FBI and then back to the Res as a member of the Navajo Tribal Police (now Clah is a special investigator). Each new series entry shows Ella struggling with, and often attaining, some kind of balance between the two worlds. Each mystery is also a satisfying puzzle on its own. In the latest, Ella and her cousin, also with the tribal police, on an expedition to find wood, discover a victim of a knifing attack—the Thurlos lead the reader through a riveting account of tracking clues in an outside, uncontrolled scene. The knifing victim works for a satellite phone service; his death and subsequent attacks come from opposition to the service. Razor-sharp suspense, deep atmosphere, and compelling characters make this another Ella Clah winner. --Connie Fletcher

On the Navaho Reservation in New Mexico, everyone is appalled by the brutal assault of Ervin Benally. Most people assume the beating was in direct reaction to Benally planning to install StarTalk on the reservation. This satellite phone system would enable instant cheap communication across the reservation.

Navajo Tribal Police Officer Ella Clah investigates the brutal incident. She quickly finds the Fierce Ones vigilantes involved, but is unable to figure out why as this group is known for instant eye for an eye justice. Ella soon realizes someone has purposely set up the beating and the vigilante group as a distraction for her and other law enforcement investigators, but once again remains in the dark as to whom and why.

Although there are too many cul de sac false clues followed, the latest Team Thurlo Navaho police procedural is an engaging and enthralling mystery. Ella is a terrific lead protagonist as she struggles with a case in which each step forward in progress seems to lead to two diagonally giant steps back. However, the star of COYOTE'S WIFE and this strong investigative series is the Navaho as the audience obtains a deep look into life on the New Mexico reservation.

Another strong woman character in a great book. This is a very nice series with a whole lot of information that I have learned about the Nis avajo nation. Ella Clah is a special investigator for the Navajo nation and she lives in a conflicted world. I like her story and I like the way it is written. If you are in the mood for strong women, exciting adventures, Indian country and mystery, this is a good book for you.

This one had me going as to who the main culprit was, right to the end. Excellent characters, plot, twists n history. I'd give a 10 star rating if I could.
I highly recommend this book and these authors.

There was not much of an interesting or good story here. I felt it had too many roving uninteresting disconnected trails. This novel just didn't do much in any way to keep me wanting more. No real mystery or thrills. I would not recommend it to anyone.

Still I'd give it 3.5 stars. Parts of the story were downright boring. I seemed like one long streak of bad things happening, with the cops chasing after shadows and arriving just in time to process the scene. I didn't see that there was much special about the heroine, just a harried woman who's life revolves around her job and her kid. She talked tough, but there wasn't really much action to back up that tough girl image.

The thing that kind of bothered me about the book is that I often felt like the authors were sticking in dialogue to explain points that didn't really need explaining. It made the dialogue seem stilted and unnatural.

The plotting was decent, but not as captivating as it could be. There was a whole lot of explaining that went on instead of discovery.

A well written, well paced novel. Not too descriptive or flowery.
It kept my interest until the end. I especially like the way Ella's family life
is included along with her work as an investigator.

I like how candidly these authors portray native and non co-existence on the reservation and surrounding areas. Common among all reservations, i would suppose.
