Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Writing Crack the Indie Author Code (and Write Your Book: Aspire to Inspire) was a long, slow process because it was not so much written as it was acquired and accrued. I can write fiction quickly, but these writing guides were built a day at a time as I blogged my research on publishing and explored my thought on writing well.
Because of my background in journalism and publishing, I talked more about writing craft and editing early on. That turned out to suit the arc of this writing guide perfectly because it's a progression from sitting at the keyboard to being published. What I didn't expect until I revisited much of the material was how defiant many of these chapters read. I think you need that attitude as an author, no matter what you write or where you publish.

About the Author

~ Robert Chazz Chute is a former journalist, editor, speech writer and magazine columnist living in Canada. (Some would say "hiding" in Canada. They would not be wrong.)

Chute has won seven writing awards, has a degree in journalism and philosophy and is a graduate of the Banff Publishing Workshop. He worked in traditional publishing in Toronto for several years. Now all he does is blog, podcast, write fiction and the occasional guide to writing and publishing.

Quit waffling and go ahead and hit the Buy Now button. There is at least one thing in this book that will help you and there very well may be forty seven. This isn't just some dude who threw up a writing advice book to make a few dollars. Robert has spent a career in the trenches and on the street. This book is full of good advice with a serious intention of helping the reader. You will not regret buying this one.

I've read several books about writing and I can honestly say that this is one of the best of them. Chute gives a lot of fantastic advice here. What made the book especially enjoyable for me is Chute's voice throughout the book. He has a great sense of humor and I laughed out loud several times while reading this.

So, if want a great writing book that's a very enjoyable and fun read, you should definitely check this one out.

I have never come across a non-fiction book that is written more like a story. I found it refreshing, and the writing style does not take away from the valuable information presented.

I read on a Kindle, and make notes as I go along so that I can reread sections or specific advice later. With this book, there are 29. "Write to delight yourself and hope that you find someone who agrees with your take", and "Write each chapter as if it's a short story" are but two of these.

There are also numerous tips that I did not mark, but implemented immediately.

The book does not only cover writing, but also includes publishing and marketing your book. I will read it again, as I'm sure I'll pick up a number of golden nuggets that I missed the first time round.

If you want to learn more about being an Indie Author in a fun, informative way, get this book.

The author (who is one of my favorites when it comes to fiction) takes the Chuck Wendig approach to offering advice: wrap up a great idea in a funny scenario and subtly hammer it home by giving it something the reader will remember.

And the advice is great, timely and can even be used in your everyday life if you care to improve that as well... I hope he keeps putting these non-fiction books out in the future as well as the great fiction.

I'm not a big fan of "how to" non-fiction, but as an Indie Author myself, I couldn't resist the temptation to get a copy just to see if Chute's information is any different than all the other books out there on the subject. The title alone was enough to entice me to pick it up and start reading. Chute doesn't offer instruction but rather inspiration and support to other Indies who desire to break new ground in the ever changing landscape of the publishing industry.

Right up front the author suggests his readers do two things aspiring authors can do. First, he builds a case for why independent authors should pay it forward and support one another with what they have discovered while producing and selling their novels. Second, he challenges first time authors to match the reading of this cleverly presented guide chapter for chapter (i.e. read one and write one).

Though I've stumbled upon several of the suggestions Chute shares, I wished I'd have read this single source before self publishing my first novel. It would surely have saved lots of heart ache and anxiety, but most importantly, I would have had a lot more fun experiencing the adventure of writing and publishing for the first time.

First timers and veteran authors should take the time out to read this short and inspirational reference for writing and publishing fiction independently.

This book was written for aspiring writers who have had their heads filled with writing and publishing advice from the previous generation and now need a modern and realistic perspective on the publishing business. The author has been involved in the publishing business for a while, and shares both his successes and his failures. The book inspired me with new ideas for my own publishing efforts. Can't guarantee it will inspire you, of course, but it won't be for the author's lack of trying. Moreover, his writing voice and style made the book a pleasure for me to read.

This book is not a step-by-step detailed process to "crack the indie code," so if that's what you're looking for, this book ain't it. That's because there is no sure-fire step-by-step process for success in indie publishing. Instead, the book gives the reader insights to many different facets of indie publishing. This book will give you lots to think about as it questions the traditional schools of thought about writing and publishing.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I downloaded this book for free during a promotional period, but I don't believe my review would be any different had I paid for it.

It's been a while since I finished this book, and yet I still have some of the thoughts and challenges in here in my head. I remember a lot of what was said in this book, mark of an awesome read in my opinion. A great resource and way to spur on your career, all while chuckling to yourself and sometimes just downright cackling with laughter. Chazz had this great voice and pretty much all of his opinions matched straight on with mine. This is one book I'm so glad I have and will go back to again and again.
