We meet Hootie Two-Bears Hootier in the opening chapters of the book. Just released from a short stay in a juvenile facility on Rikers Island, Hootie's been summarily expelled from his mother's Harlem apartment and onto the mean streets of New York. The message is simple enough: sink or swim, kid, your own your own. Hootie's father, now deceased, was a Crow Indian; his mother is a light-skinned black woman. As another character tells Hootie, he could be anything, from black to white to Latino to Indian. His identity is his own to forge as he moves through a dark world as tempting as it is essentially violent.
I don't want to give anything away here, but I will say that Cracker Bling is extremely atmospheric and filled with strong, vividly-defined characters. I surely recommend it to anybody who likes hard-boiled crime fiction.
