Dave Cornford has long balanced creative pursuits in writing, stage directing, videography and gastronomy with a career dealing with numbers.

His first book, "Cracks in the Ceiling" (2011), is a collection of short stories set in the wake of the Global Financial Crisis, while his second, "Nanna's Travel Tips" (2012), is a humourous look at travel through the eyes of "Nanna".

He has also published:

"The Queensberry Rule". A novel about the dark side of revenge, and the illusiveness of redemption.

"Warm Honey" is a novel about families and the shadows they cast.

The "Advanced Smash Repairs" series, which is set in a smash repair business that "knows too much." Quirky and off-beat, the series is available in six separate episodes, or as one "six pack."

The Diary of the 17th Man is a series of unhinged cricket humour, written in diary form by the "17th Man" - the last man picked in the Australian Cricket Team.

"Live-Fiction" is an ongoing series of novellas, each tackling a contemporary issue through a fictional lens. There are now more than a dozen stories and three anthologies available, as well as a podcast.

Dave lives in Sydney with his wife and three children.

So how would you handle losing a large amount of money? These short pieces look at some who had that happen to them in the GFC. We see lots of different characteristics here, compassion, slyness, revenge, envy, dismay and fear. Well written and easy to read I could recognise some people I knew. Well, not quite recognise, but see similar behaviour from some.

Good observation by the author leads to believable characters reacting to unpleasant and worrying situations. However there is also a humorous twist to the conclusion of some pieces, as we recognise what the aggrieved iPod loser has actually done to obtain his iPod.

I enjoyed the book and will read it again.

A compilation of short stories proved to be the perfect introduction to eBooks! Unsure how I was going to adapt to this new format, I found Cracks in the Ceiling by Dave Cornford to be an entertaining set of stories built around the context of the GFC. The author uses an enjoyable contemporary style of writing which melds the characters with their experiences and helps the reader enter into the frame. Often I was looking forward to another installment to expand on the characters and further progression of the story beyond that which was presented in Cracks in the Ceiling. I am certainly interested in pursuing eBook reading, while waiting for more of Dave Cornford's work I think I'll go for another compilation of short stories ... Jeffrey Archer, Alexander McCall Smith ???

Pretty Solid Collecton

I enjoyed Mr. Cornford's collection of stories. He gives us characters from all walks of life, from CEOs to neglected teens, and does a compelling job of intertwining the lives of people who might never have met under ordinary circumstances. What I like best is that we get an bit of international flavor, as the stories take place across a few different countries. The only real clunker in this collection for me was the iPod story. That one seemed a little too First World Problems, compared to the rest of the collection. I still recommend this as a good read.

The iPod story alone is worth the $2.99. Luckily ALL the stories were great. Real people, interesting situations and some unexpected reactions/resolutions kept my interest right through. I read it in one sitting because I just couldn't wait to see what else Mr Cornford would come up with. Did I mention the iPod story?

I loved this book. Although, when I started reading I was a bit afraid that there would be some dry analysis of the GFC interwoven within the stories but I was pleasantly surprised that is was all about characters and any financial information was seamlessly incorporated into the lives of, what felt to me, real people. I think the author achieved his goal of telling stories about ordinary people affected by the GFC. These characters drew me in and I felt that I understood them. There were some that I wanted more of - in particular, what happened to the two Jacks next?

This is a brilliant short story anthology which anyone in corporate life should be able to relate to. The stories of people in and around the GFC bring a human dimension to the events of the last few years aside from CDOs CDSs and sub prime mortgages. The author has a canny knack of using the English language to convey levels of meaning while at the same time causing the odd hysterical outburst!
