When first logging into the admin screen of the cradlepoint it did tell me a newer firmware update was available, I did go ahead and update it.
One note, during setup it asked to setup the 4g Realm, not sure what that is or if it's needed. I noticed that there was no option for "verizon" in the dropdown but there was other carriers. I left the box blank and hit "next", appears to be working just fine.
I'm glad I went this route, refurbished works and is saving me 50% of buying this brand new and I couldn't be happier with it.
As many people know, 3G cards do not work with tablets and as such this router is a great work-around for that problem. This review will only help the people traveling to India and want a small personal router to connect their devices. I tested the Reliance Netconnect and Tata Photon 3G-broadband USB-cards with the Toshiba Thrive tablet, iPhone and a Samsung Transform. While in the US, I connected to my local network and reset the admin passwords and guest login. When in India, I initially could not connect because certain codes needed to be added to make the 3G-card authenticate with the remote server. This code below (copy and paste) will work for both tested cards and connecting speeds have been slightly slower than connecting the 3G cards directly to a computer (as I used to do previously). I thank Sridhar on EVDO forum for posting the code.
Use the Userid and password for the USB card as given by the service provider in Basic>WAN page. After you complete this do the following.
Go to the MODEM>Settings page. Choose the modem from the drop down list and type the following AT commands below:
ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
There are fields for modem password, SIM pin and APN name etc. Leave them all blank.
Save and Reboot the router.
I had a little trouble when I went to rename the router and change the password. After I did this, my computer wouldn't connect to the wifi signal. This forced me to do a hard reset of the router, after which I was able to reconnect to it using the default parameters (but I had to go back into the setup menu again to cancel 4G and switch to 3G). I haven't tried to mess with any of that again, and it works just fine. I originally bought the router for my new Kindle Fire, since I can just plug the USB modem directly into my laptop. But now both my laptop and my Kindle can connect and there are no problems. I didn't notice my laptop web browsing speeds were any slower. The Kindle's web browsing was kind of lagging, but this might be the Silk browser itself and not the WiFi connection.
I did have an issue when I first setup the router, my USB wifi card didn't connect to the router. After that I used the iphone which worked fine. After the configuration everything worked fine.
I am very satisfied with the product which offers a lot of connectivity options.
I works with my ZTE USB modem without any configuration on Etisalat and Roshan Af.
