My application is primarily for dry use, both for general purpose vacuuming and for occasional woodworking. When I opted to try and leverage my shop vac for dust control when working with wood, it was apparent the white (basic) filters were not sufficient. Puffs of dust would emerge every time it was started and occasionally through use, especially with things like sanding. I opted to try this filter and bingo, it does the job well enough for me. I know the pros exude the benefits of dedicated woodworking vacuums, but for me, this combination does well enough. With a few universal adapters and a 1-1/4" conversion, I get better performance from my tools and my garage isn't covered in dust particles. Crisis solved.
I wouldn't trust this filter to cleaning up the hanta virus, but it's worth the extra cost if you utilize your shop vac for fine particles. In fact, seeing the difference, I'd probably just use these over the white ones if given the choice even if I wasn't working with wood.
Seems to work very well. I'm using it on my old Craftsman Wet Dry 3 Peak H.R. 8 Gallon shop vac. It only fits by omitting the large rigid filter gasket that came with the vac, and using the lock nut thing that came with the filter instead of the original one. When I left the gasket in place I couldn't make the lock nut grab the threads of the piece that holds the filter in place, but it doesn't seem to make any difference.
Not sure I can quantify exactly how good the filter is, but it seems to work well, and I'm trusting that the extra cost provides extra filtration...
