I honestly don't understand most of the negative reviews on these pedals. I've been riding the cheapest level beaters you can buy for 12 years in Illinois, Texas and Virginia. First ones lasted 8 years and I sold them with the bike they were on because my cleats were worn out. At the time, I think the replacement cleats were $20 and the pedals were $30, which is completely dumb. The second ones I slammed on a rock and bent after 3 years, but it was in great working condition otherwise. Overall, for 40 dollars, you can't go wrong with these. Negative reviews just show that some people can tear up anything...

I bought these from REI for $35. I was psyched, I knew people who raced with the eggbeaters and loved them, and I was looking to put them on my road bike for commuting and long distance riding. They are GREAT for commuting, easy to get in and out of quickly, and I love the pedals. The problem came after about 2 or so months when the right pedal wouldn't clip anymore. Since I bought them at REI I lost the receipt, and couldn't get it from order history. I contacted Crank Bothers and they needed the receipt for the warranty (which is reasonable). I'm glad I got them so cheap- but don't waste your money on the Eggbeaters 1. Pay the extra for the 2 or 3. I am replacing my pedals with the Eggbeaters 3.

I've had a pair of 1's for the last couple years. I've put more than 1000 off road miles on them. I've bashed them on roots, stumps, logs, and the occasional rock (Florida rocks - not Colorado rocks). They have been hit hard many times and seldom unclip your shoe when you don't want it to - but it does happen on occasion. I have the version with the red anodized spring which has mostly worn off. The arms are only half chromed now since the chrome has slowly chipped off from impacts and other abuse. They've been ridden extensively in mud, sand, and dust. They are still ticking. The arms haven't bent. The spring hasn't come out of it's retention slot. The bearings are still smooth and tight - although I've opened the pedals up 3 times to re-grease and re-torque to spec. They look beaten and hard core - which I find pretty cool because they still work as well as when they were new. In short, for $44 pedals (current price), they are as tough as I could expect.

They will release with a good bash. Sometimes you get a click when clipping in and sometimes not. Sometimes I can start a tough section expecting to click in easily and have to manage it with a foot unclipped because the pedal decided that it just wasn't going to cooperate. If you have weak soled riding shoes, you might feel the metal arms through the soles. Stiff soles are no problem. The finish will start to decline if you actually ride hard on real trails - not necessarily a bad thing.

I like my Candy 2's a little better than my EB1's, but for $44 - they are good pedals.

I have heard many bad reviews about these pedals, especially in terms of longevity. I have only been riding on them for a couple months but I have had probably 20 accidents in the time period and beat the pedals pretty good without them failing in any way. The spring is only painted red so that will come off with use.

They are relatively easy to get into, but it depends on the height of the tread on your shoes. I just wish they were a little bit cheaper.

This is my third set of Eggbeaters. I personally prefer the four sided entry and until they wear out they are great. Little stiff to enter when they are new, but they get easier to enter after some time.

Great pedal. Super-easy to install. The cleats included are far superior to SPD cleats. Very "soft" clip-in, no harsh movements or metal-on-metal noise. Greatly reduced some knee pain I had been experiencing.

all the functionality you want out of a crankbrothers product. I wish they kept some of the same aesthetics from years past with the colored springs. These are a little on the bland side, but work well. Only clipless system I've ever used. Will never use another one.

UPDATE.

Within one year of owning two sets (one was already replaced by crankbrothers, for free) they have failed twice. One pedal seized up, would not engage with cleat. The other, completely fell off the axle.

To be completely transparent, I have probably put about 6000 miles on these, year round, through some of the worst weather Chicago has had to offer. I have had this family of pedals before and haven't had similar problems. Due to the great design and customer service, I'm simply upgrading in hopes that I get more durability and better results.

After the first ride the paint chipped off, also there was a little play in the left in the left pedal I couldn't figure out but I I probably will after more riding. Beautiful design, easy exit and entry! Plus, no worries about the snow anymore.
