Objectively a good game: yes. Get if if you haven't played the originals as it's a good way to play them.
Subjectively, I don't find it better than the originals and cannot recommend them on that alone.
I grew up playing the original Trilogy (maybe 1 less than 2 and 3). Needless to say, I had alot of muscle memory/physics issues that caused me to enjoy this game less. I also (at one point) stopped enjoying the game part-way through number 2 and just kept progressing for the sake of finishing it. Let me get on with the details.
Graphics
They are quite good. depending on the version you get, you may not care at all, or notice it. the PS4 and PC Version (I assume the XBONE is just as good) have noticeably better graphics and work better with higher resolutions. This game obviously had to be scaled down to work with the Switch's hardware which is fine. If you have not played the other versions, you will not notice. I don’t have many complaints about the graphics. Though, little bits of "character" are missing from the orginals. Personally I am not fussed and think they look great. Vicarious Visions (VV) has done alot of things right here including extra character on otherwise bland cut-scenes of the originals.
Bosses and levels look quite good. I was quite impressed. If you're looking for 60 FPS you may opt to play the PC version (not sure on the PS4/XBONE versions). Here, the frame rate is pretty solid and I had no issues with it. Though some of the lighting in places seems a bit off.
Sound
As a whole I feel the sound track just okay when you compare them to the originals. Some tracks are definitely weaker in their original counter parts. Though some tracks (Like Cortex Battle in Crash 3) are quite good while others (like the Arabian Levels in Crash 3 and Future Levels in Crash 2) sound a bit bland. Voice acting as a whole is not bad all. Some lines were done better in the original vs in this game (check out N Trophy's lines along with his battle to see the obvious differences). Though some lines in this game beat the originals.
Gameplay
This is the bulk of my woes are. Due to a differing hit box coupled with weightier jumps seem to make some levels are made harder than you would experience in original trilogy. That and some of the "vehicle" sections seem off. These two changes are where most of my frustrations came from. Obviously, you can get used to them, but in some instances (mostly in the Jet Ski levels in Crash 3) they may be no want to play them period. It appears the levels were designed with the old hitbox and physics in mind of the original trilogy, but in some levels don’t appear to be updated to match the new physics. I've had my share of Crash just randomly sliding off boxes due to the hitbox (which can be pretty annoying). To make up for it it's said that you "need more precision" which I don't buy. The original series did need precision, and doesn't punish you by having you slide off a platform and such. To this, this was a major breaking point for me.
If you're new to the series, I generally recommend to play the 2nd and 3rd games as the 1st game is far less forgiving. However, the first game is ALOT more accessible here than in the orginal. There are more checkpoints, and gems are much easier to get not requiring a perfect run (aside from the colored gem runs). In general, all three games have tough challenges in the original are made much harder with the added physics. If you suffer from depth perception issues (which can crop up in this game) it can be made worse here (I spent too many lives jumping too early).
Also, you can play as Coco outside of the levels she appeared in for Crash 3. She's freaking adorable although she's palate swap of Crash.
The Bosses have had some tweaks. It seems like some that were easy are made easier for some reason (Dingodile being an example) given I could just run in circles and cheese that). Though alot charm from the original series is missing in some bosses, some of the charm that Vicarious Visions added is a great touch (like Kola Kong for instance).
VV did alot right with this game and had many missed opportunities. Objectively is this still a good game? Yes, heck yes. Though the physics was enough of a sticking point (even after learning to deal with them) for me to make me not recommend this to anyone who thought the physics was a major sticking point in the originals (and learned them to a letter).
If you've played the original crash games before give a whirl and see what you think most everyone who says they have enjoyed, it. If you haven't played the originals play this anyway as you won't have to contend with muscle memory and this will give you an idea how Crash was in his prime.
some difficult levels! fun for all ages…
