Interestingly, the rump of GPA became AerFi, which merged with a couple of other leasing companies and became AerCap. AerCap recently bought what was once GPA's rival, ILFC, from AIG -- and now AerCap, the direct corporate successor to GPA, is the second-largest aircraft leasing company in the world. So, from the old GPA you can trace both today's Number 1 and Number 2 aircraft leasing companies. GPA is the fundamental reason why today the center of world aircraft leasing is Ireland -- so many folks got their start there, and have founded other Irish aircraft leasing entities. Even non-Irish aircraft lessors often base their leasing activities in Ireland, due to the local talent and favorable tax laws.
GPA collapsed basically because of hubris. Dr Tony Ryan, it's founder, took on too much, too fast. Interesting sidenote -- another family project was Ryanair, today the biggest low-cost carrier in Europe. These were talented people, for all they stubbed their toe badly on GPA.

I really liked the wonderful titles the top guys swopped around with each other and the earning of a negative ‘bonus’ made me roar! For the writer it must have been an absolute roller coaster ride. At times totally exhilarating with unbelievable international travel to exotic (and at times dangerous) locales but the ‘brutal’ travel schedule must have been an absolute killer. At other times enormously frustrating, particularly those infamous Monday morning sales meetings which must have been highly demotivating. Talk about the sharp end of the business and flying by the seat of your pants. A great read - highly recommended for anyone with an interest in the business side of commercial aviation.
