Top customer reviews
The pros of this over the "newer model" are:
Your crayons don't have to go in "sleeves" (these get lost easily anyway)
You can SEE all of the crayons--even if they are laying sideways or broken off.
The sharpener is removable
Turns easily so it is easy to locate a color, especially because of the different levels
Easy to carry
I imagine Crayola stopped making or is phasing out this tower, and that is why the price has jumped so much lately. The "newer model" of this (it has thick, yellow sides and does not telescope) was available at the time I first purchased this set, but the sets were about the same price, and after reading reviews and seeing the picture, I chose this (even though it has 2 less crayons). I WANT to buy this again, but cannot justify the outrageous price for a bunch of crayons. Instead, I will probably wind up purchasing the "newer model", pitching the case it comes in, and putting the crayons in the old clear telescoping tower.
It would be great if Crayola were to go back to THIS original design, but add a removable lid of some sort to make the crayons easier to store and keep dust and lint out. THAT would be the ultimate tower.
Update: A year later, I am still wishing they would bring this model back. I have had 2 rotations of 120 count boxes (and of course their "newer model" of this product, which I will still not buy again) and it has been a nightmare keeping track of crayons in my house. It wouldn't be such a big deal if I hadn't seen how convenient this was; I got used to it, and now I can't have it. I'm sad. My kids are now back to using a clear Tupperware, and dumping half (or all) of it out on the table every time they need a certain color. Please bring this model back!!
The only complaint that I have is if a crayon breaks, it will be hard to retrieve out of the tower. However, if I recall from my childhood, they were hard to fish out of the original box, too. ;)
The downside to that was that the box packaging doesn't completely cover and protect the crayons, so about 10 to 15% of the crayons had their tips broken off. A few were pretty crushed. I wanted to send them back, but my kid was pretty upbeat about the situation. The tower does come with a crayon sharpener, one of the features that my daughter was excited about, so it gave her an excuse right away to use the crayon sharpener.
If your child isn't as optimistic as mine, you may want to purchase this in person, so you can inspect the crayons for breakage. I wouldn't recommend ordering it online as a gift, because of the risk of it arriving in an imperfect state. I personally would have been upset as a child if my crayons were broken before I could even use them.
