This is the same Crayola Color Wonder Magic Light Brush as the last model - this one just includes Metallic Paper. You put batteries in the small paint console and each individual paint color lights up when you put the brush in that specific color. The gel colors look clear until the child paints the color wonder paper. Then the colors appear. My boys (9,6,3) love this toy. The 9 year old loses interest quickly but says it is "cool". The younger boys use it again and again for about 30 minutes at a time.

The only drawback I find as a mom is that the paint refills are expensive and difficult to find. Do not pay the 16-18$ they charge on Amazon as they should be 4-5$. I bought our paint refills at Walmart for 5.99 but I just looked online and they are not available online. They are usually with the Crayola art section there - not with the toys. The Crayola Store online has the paint refills 2 for 8.99 (but with 6.99 for shipping the paint is the same price as the refills offered on Amazon). I guess I just have a hard time paying the same price for paint refills as the initial toy!

A technical point - Make sure you clean the gel paint off the brush after each use like any paintbrush as the brush will not work (will not read the colors) if there is too much gel paint dried on the end. If the gel paint does dry on the brush just wrap a warm dishtowel around the tip and it will come off.

All said this toy is a worthwhile purchase if you can stomach the refill prices. I would not buy this unless you are willing to order a refill set now though because your kids will go thru the paint quickly and the toy is useless without the refill. If you have last years model though just go buy metallic paper and you will have the same thing! Happy painting.....

1. Electrical Issues
We had problems getting this toy to work at all initially - assumed it had an electrical short but finally got the brush to start lighting up. Several days later my daughter went to play with it and no light again. I assumed it was just a defective wire, but before giving up completely we tried changing the batteries even though it had only previously been on about 2 minutes. It started working! As soon as my daughter stopped painting, I turned the switch to off but the brush stayed lit up. I tried the off and on switch several times but the light worked in either position. This explained the need for new batteries, so now we have to store it with the batteries out which requires removing two screws and a panel. The way the battery compartment is made it won't hold the batteries in without the panel screwed on - this is a major pain.
2. How it really works
The paint is the same as the color wonder mess free fingerpaints (which I reccomend over this product). Each paint, just like color wonder markers, is made to turn a specific color on the special paper. When you hold the brush (attached to a short elecrtical cord) over a specific pot of paint the brush tip lights up the color the paint will turn when it's on the paper. The paint pots are all hooked together and have to be inserted a certain way (this is how the brush knows which one it's hovering over).
3. Fun factor
It's really neat to see your brush glow the different colors!
4. Painting functionality
It's a big rough bristly brush. NO fine detail can be painted. Best for my 3 yr old who just smears paint on, not so good for my 7yr old that we bought it for.

The cord is too short for a left handed child? My child received this for Christmas, and he gets frustrated with the length of the cord.

This is a no muss, no fuss system of painting. No way they can spill paints and ruin whatever might be in it's path. It was given to an almost 5 year old who squealed when she got it. There are refills available for the paint, as well as the special paint pads. Some may think it's pricey, but for the no mess guarantee, it's really not bad at all. You can leave a 5+ year old alone and not worry about them ruining the surrounding area. Watch eyes light up as they use this paint...........it's pretty cool.

Gifted this item for Christmas to a 4 year old girl. You can't go wrong with Color Wonder! This light brush looked like so much fun! Crayola products are always our favorite and seem to be of better quality than others. When we bought it on Amazon, the price was better than in the store...plus prime shipping made it even better!

Unfortunately the way the description and the commercials depicted this product were super mis-leading. The colors are pastel not bright primary/mixed colors. They sometimes don't even show up on the paper at all. My daughter who is 4 1/2 asked "santa" for this as her only gift and when she first played with it, she was dissapointed pointing out that the red wasn't red but pink and some of the other colors like blue, yellow and green don't really show up. Glad it was discounted but really isn't worth the batteries you have to buy to make the item funtctional.
