When you press hard while coloring with these color pencils you get a very velvety color that is intense and dark and very rich. While you might get the same quality and effect using classic color pencils from Crayola I feel like these give so much more pigment and color.
These also blend very nicely together with other colors.
I've included some pictures colored with these colored pencils. The second picture was used with a lot of pressure in the hair and I had to sharpen a few times to get the effect I wanted making me go through the color pencil pretty quickly but I still like how it showed up on the paper.
My first reaction is that this set could use a couple more purples and greens. It seems very heavy on the reds and oranges. A lot of the blues are more on the green side- teal, aqua, sea-green, etc. But only a couple of truly green colors. The reds lean more orange as well, with only one true "red". I would have gladly traded the 2 metallic colors (3, if you count the Bronze Yellow) for purple or green. Pro- you will receive 50 different colors with no dupes.
Included are some photos of my swatch page for this brand. Please be aware that monitor colors differ and the colors may not appear as vibrant as reality. Swatched on plain "printer" paper, not cardstock or toothy quality paper. Each box is colored with the same pressure. The top third of each box is one layer of color. The middle third is two layers of color. The bottom third is three layers. The left side is not blended while the right side is blended with a Prisma colorless pencil. Also included is a quick coloring page done with minimal blending using only these pencils.
I would say these should work fine for my needs, HOWEVER, true "artists" who are looking for blend-able highly pigmented pencils probably wouldn't like them. I think they are best suited for students or learners who are not willing to shell out for the high-priced brands. This is definitely a case of "you get what you pay for".
For someone new to coloring this is a perfect starter set. 50 colors is plenty to get you going.
Later - if you become addicted like so many of us - you can invest in Prismacolor. (Don't bother buying a small set of Prismacolor. Too annoying to have only a few colors. Wait until you can buy a larger set.)
I love having a mix of pencil brands to play with. Different brands blend together in interesting ways. I find even the cheapo Michael's store brand which are mostly wax and almost no color are great for blending and burnishing after you've filled in an area with Prismacolor.
When I give a coloring book to someone new to adult coloring I include a 50 pack of Crayola pencils.
If you are looking for decent set of colored pencils, please don't consider this set. These pencils are very low quality (I know price is low but even so it is vesting money). There is not vibrant color (pigments) in them, some of my pencils are missing part of body (chip out) and they are bent which is causing hard time to sharpen them. Don't recommend this purchase.
