Well, it was. A fun, creative mess. Luckily, I covered the table my daughter was working on with tons of newspaper, so clean up was actually pretty easy, but yes...it's messy!
It's also easy to use and a lot of fun. After a quick read of the instructions, my daughter was able to make clings with the included molds. Making her own mold with the clay was a little less successful, but she still had fun doing it.
The main thing that parents are going to need to know is that your child is going to be able to use this just a couple of times before running out of the materials to make more.
Still a good indoor activity.
Note: If you live in a very hot climate, you don't want to leave these on your windows for very long. Speaking from experience in a So Cal summer - they can be very, very hard to get off a window if it gets hot enough for this to start running into a melty mess.
We read the directions and grabbed some glitter to add to our designs. The directions are straightforward and easy to follow. I assembled the unit without the directions actually and just looked at the picture on the box.
My daughter picked out to molds to start with and she wanted to make three colors: purple, green, and yellow. Since the mixing jars are clear I found it best to hold them up at eye level and add 'Solution B'. My daughter, who is 5 1/2, found it difficult to see the liquid so she asked me to do it. (The age recommendation is 8+). She wanted to mix a few colors to make purple and green and then yellow by itself. We actually decided to shake them up ourselves instead of using the 'shaker maker' on the unit. After about 60 seconds of shaking, I took the lids off of the jars and discovered that the purple was mostly set already. The other two were still liquid. The purple was finished being mixed maybe a minute before I finished shaking up the other two so I guess that was enough time to make it unusable? **The directions say you have about 5 minutes to use it once it's mixed but in our case it was more like 2 minutes.**
I poured the green and yellow into two molds and quickly sprinkled some glitter on them. I noticed that they were set in about 5 minutes, but feel free to wait the full 15 the directions say. You have to be very careful when removing the clings because they can tear. The snake we did tore a little bit when I was removing it. (It may have not done that had I waited the required time prior to removal.) I successfully removed both designs and my daughter quickly wanted to place the clings on our downstairs bathroom mirror.
We then rolled out the clay to make an "R" which was my daughter's first name initial. I cut all the way through the clay. I'm sure you could use any shape cutters you have on hand instead of solely using the included 'molding tool'. I cut away at the clay to make the cling removal easier. My daughter promptly hung that one up too. Cleanup took a little bit of effort. I opted to use my fingernails and the molding tool to scrape out the hardened material. We made 3 clings and used almost 1 whole tube of 'Solution B' out of the included 6. However, it is the 3 tubes of colorant that seem to get used up a lot more. The directions say you can make up to 20 clings with the included materials.
The price of this is usually $20-$25 but I feel it shouldn't be more than $15. The refills are also pricey and are $10 right now.
To make it there are small containers with two lines marked on them (A and B). The lines are hard to see so I marked them with a permanent marker to make it easier for my kid to see. But then all you do is squeeze the gel solution tube into the container up to line A and the color solution tube up to line B. The tubes are easy enough to squeeze that my 3 yr old can do it alone and the exact amounts arent hard and fast rules. If you add a little too much gel solution or color solution it doesn't self combust and makes window clings just the same. You get 3 color tubes with the starter set (refills can be bought separately) and colors can be mixed for any color of the rainbow. Once youve added the solution and color, you cap the container (I had to help my 3 yr old do this) and then shake it vigorously either with arm power or with the shaker they include. The included shaker is powered by pressing a lever so again easy enough for my 3 yr old. Once all mixed you pour it into one of the provided molds or make your own mold out of the clay they provide.
It really is fun to watch as it solidifies into a gummy window cling (takes about 20-30 min to fully dry) and you can easily customize any aspect of the design so its not repetetive or boring. And like I said its truly easy enough for even my 3 yr old to do it. And if you spill any? Once it solidifies its really easy to clean up! Thats always a plus in my book.
Only one small downside - it smells strongly like childrens washable paint. Not a horrible smell but not a great one either. Smell goes away once it solidifies into the window cling but while making it there is that smell to consider. Otherwise great great product!
