Top customer reviews
Unlike some other learning kit toys we have tried, the plastic parts fit together well enough that the resulting product is actually usable and approaches a normal marker in quality. The colors may be slightly thin, but show up fine on white paper. The three starting colors provided each have a fruity smell; I like the blue color best. The kit includes a graduated cylinder so the colors can be mixed in precise proportions, and a sheet to record the results of each combination, so it is kinda like science. After the 16 markers are all made, there are some stickers to color and other minor activities in the kit. Perhaps seeing that "magic markers" are not actually powered by magic will encourage my daughter to put the caps back onto all her markers.
At 20 bucks this kit is priced maybe $5 higher than I wish it was.
The kit comes with all the marker parts, the thing that pushes them together and snaps it all in place, the scented ink, a color mixing sheet, scratch and sniff stickers to decorate your markers with, stickers to color and boxes to color and store your markers in. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. All parts were nicely packaged in a tray that also serves for storing any parts not yet made. My kids are 7, 5, and 2 and all were able to make a marker with at least some help.
The part that snaps the markers together was a little hard for my kids to do on their own. They just weren't strong enough yet, but mommy and daddy helped and they were fine with that. The scented ink smells nice and fruity. Not weird or chemically or perfume-y. There is red, yellow, and blue ink. The color mixing chart helps you with how many drops of each to add to make a certain color. Or you can just make a simple blue, red, or yellow one. The finished markers colored nicely and smelled great!
My kids enjoyed each step of the process and were excited to watch it all come together! There is actually some great science lessons behind the whole thing too. Like absorption. It was fun to watch the color absorb into the core, and then to watch it absorb into the tip later!
Educational concepts like following directions, absorption, measuring, mixing colors, etc were a part of this experience. Yet, making markers is just plain fun!
The only flaws with the product that I could see were how hard it is for kids to snap the marker together (although older kids might not have this issue) and the scratch and sniff stickers did not smell good at all. They were odd and perfume-y smelling. All in all though, I highly recommend this and my kids absolutely love it!
This is a really cool kit. It comes with everything you need to make markers. It even comes with boxes that you can color to put your markers in when you finish. There are scented stickers and some plain stickers for your child to color which then become scented as well.
The colors are bright. And your creations smell good.
5 STARS: My daughter gives it five stars. It can be messy if you’re not careful, but it cleans up easily. The only other suggestions I would make is to: 1. Add maybe some white that smells like vanilla maybe so that you could have more shades, and 2. Include labels to use on the markers you create as some of the colors are difficult to distinguish.
