After the experimental outings of There s Always Vanilla and Season of the Witch, Night of the Living Dead director George A. Romero returned to rather more distinct horror territory with his 1973 infection opus The Crazies.

When a plane carrying a secret biological weapon crash-lands in the vicinity of a small, rural town, the area descends into chaos. Infected with a virus that sends them into a homicidal frenzy, the locals turn on each other in an orgy of bloody violence. As the army cordons off the town and government agents clash with scientists over the appropriate course of action, a small band of survivors attempt to make their way to safety.

Starring cult icon Lynn Lowry (Shivers, I Drink Your Blood), the influence of Romero s The Crazies can be felt in everything from the director s own subsequent work many commentators have noted the stylistic and thematic similarities to his zombie classic Dawn of the Dead right up to Danny Boyle s 28 Days Later and beyond.

Campy non-horror classic

I feel like maybe this film doesn't get the respect it deserves, probably because a lot of people are watching it hoping to see a Night of the Living Dead sequel. But it's not really a horror film per se; it's more a gov't conspiracy movie. The gov't has spilled a chemical weapon, but doesn't want anyone to know, so it won't tell anyone what's going on. So then the fully armed rednecks rebel and everyone is shooting everyone. It has some horror genre touches--a lot of blood, there is an element of incest that makes you feel uncomfortable, some crazy people. But again, it's not really going to make genre fans happy because what it is really doing is presenting a thinly-veiled critique of the gov't; it's not really a zombie movie.

But you will recognize the end of Night of the Living Dead if you know that film: groups of rednecks with guns traveling around the countryside shooting at people: evidently something Romero thought was pretty scary.

Like most Romero movies there is at least one important Black character; in this one the military Colonel in charge is Black. Also, Lynn Lowry is in this one and is great as the spaced-out love crazy. Do you want to play?

So it's campy and not super realistic but if you don't trust the gov't--and I know you don't--then it's social commentary on how people act when the wheels come off. Who is more dangerous: the crazies or the gov't trying to cover it all up...

Good premise goes unrealized

The Crazies was George Romero’s fourth film released in 1973. He built on a popular theme he would use again and again which was average Americans being hit by a plague that led to extreme violence. He was most well-known for using this in his zombie movies, but this was a variation of that.

Things start with a man going crazy and killing his wife and then burning down his house with him and his two kids inside. The population is surprised when they find out the army has taken charge of their town when they take the two injured children to the hospital. It turns out the town was infected by a biological agent leaked into the water system when a government plane crashed in the area. The weapon turns people homicidal. The army was there to purge the area. The soldiers end up terrifying the people more than the outbreak. The movie focuses upon the military trying to control the situation and a small group of civilians that escape.

The movie had a good premise, but it never really spent that much time on the people going crazy. Most of the film was spent on the army arguing with civilians about what they were doing or the group that escapes talking about what they’re going to do. The 2010 remake was much, MUCH better because it got to fully realize Romero’s vision.

A great classic movie. Very relevant if you're watching movies during Covid-19. Having said that, the audio on this upload is a little rough. Audio was overall kind of dirty and sounded like it was shaking my speakers. This was the 2nd movie I watched tonight on Amazon. Also in addition, there was a scene where there was the same audio being played twice at a lower volume. I could hear it come through a couple seconds after someone said a line of dialogue very faintly. Not sure if it was just an old sound design job, or if there was a problem with the upload to the internet.

2 star: jumped my way to the end for the ending. Unwatchable, but interested in how this turd ended.

5 star: Great moving picture show! I'll watch it again, and maybe again in a few years.

Just started the newer version. It's looking way better than the original. But if you like the old style the original is a bad movie, it's just not great.

it is a zombie movie. some scenes look like they are copied straight from the night of the living dead. seeing the slow transformation from human to zombie made me question who the real monsters were. the military is satirized brilliantly, even got some sham shield training. this version is more realistic than the 2010 version in my opinion due to the fact that i have known these characters in life.

First off, the arrowhead/video release quality is outstanding, as are the special features included on this disc. That being said, the film does not hold up and can be cheesy/laughable at certain times. While I do not regret buying this film, I think it fails to resonate with a modern audience, which is a shame since the premise is an interesting one (the breakdown of society/major virus spreading). I would recommend this film more so to George a Romero fans!

It doesn’t stand the test of time very well and the remake adds some depth to it by dealing with the arrival of the virus and how they eradicated it… which this one does not do. All that big hair is tough to watch and the special effects are anything but special but that was the norm for low budget movies so I can’t fault this one. It just didn’t draw us into it because the acting was bad, the casting was poor and it was boring. But it was a decent military satire.

The movie had potential but I feel it failed and went into another direction. Most of the time, the movie keeps shifting from one scene to another too fast to analyze and to add to this, many people in the movie are yelling like maniacs. Some scenes are bizarre and your mind needs time to absorb the crazy scenes in this movie. I did see till the end and it reminded me of Night of the Living Dead when "something" chaotic occurs and the normal people end up doing things they would never do under normal circumstances.

George Romero was a good director, RIP, but I did not like this movie. "The crazies" was just crazy.

No comment from me about the type of film this is, you're either a fan or you're not. The five stars is for the quality of the restoration. Simply put this movie has never looked better. Sympathetically done the restoration team have performed an amazing job, the movie simultaneously looks like it was shot in the 70's and also shot yesterday. I am also glad they have not tried to do anything fancy with the audio instead using the original uncompressed PCM mono audio, just as it should be. This is now the definitive version of the movie and a copy should be in every collection.

Great movie from 45 years ago..... still better than the recent re-make. George Romero would have been proud of the quality of this re-mastered version. Blu-ray excellent picture quality, disappointingly the sound is still in mono. Some interesting extras on the disc, reversible sleeve. Worth the money and long awaited. It was available last year as part of a box set. More Arrow Gold!!!
