I just want to warn everyone who is thinking about this product for a small child: it s very cool, great way to learn about magnetism and hexotropic substances (latter for older students, obviously) the way that it is made magnetic is by suspending ferrous particles in the putty. These stay in the putty fairly well. (no detectible magnetic reaction reduction after 3 weeks of 3-4 hours/day being magnetized and demagnetized repeatedly) HOWEVER... They can, and DO, come out. Even if you play with it for a few seconds, I recommend passing the included magnet over your fingers and hands and washing well because they HURT BAD when you get one in your eye. I learned this lesson the hard way and just wanted to let parents, teachers, nerds, geeks, and all the other people who might touch this stuff so that they can avoid it.
I've actually been eyeing the Crazy Aaron's Thinking Putty for years, and the price was great, but the cool chromatic color shift putty sold me. It has a green/gold shift that's hugely entertaining. What Amazon didn't tell me was that the Oil Slick putty has a shape memory! Twist it or swish it and watch it showily shift to its original shape. It will flatten out in the tin for this reason, which is fun to pry out of the tin later on. Overall, there are no negatives with this stuff (except the given that hairs can get stuck in it if you aren't careful) and I already want a second tin to keep at home!
