The Premium Stone Bowls are stoneware made from clay. Stoneware is defined as ceramics fired at about 1,100 °C (2,010 °F) to 1,300 °C (2,370 °F) and glazed. "Stone Bowl" is the common North American name for this type of bowl, directly translated from "Dol Sot" bibimbap. | Stone Bowls are made to be porous to retain heat for a longer time. However, lower quality bowls are permeable to water also. Dish detergent or other materials can enter and remain in the pores making them unsanitary. Our Premium Stone Bowls are not permeable to water, though still breathable, because they are made with finer clay and glaze-fired twice using natural glaze, unlike the ones often used in restaurants in North America. I have to start by saying that this isn't quite as large as I expected it to be. It isn't small, and I guess I did not actually measure before ordering, but I would think that a bowl labeled as large would be just a little bit bigger. I also realize now that the stoneware at our Korean market was much cheaper, so check your local place first before ordering. Still, this was the best option on Amazon.
The dish is a beautiful dark chocolate, coffee color and looks wonderful. We were so impressed when we opened it. The box it comes in is so cute with fun writing and pictures on it. It's well-packed to avoid any breakage during shipping.
Funnily enough, when he went to open up the bibimbap recipe he had bookmarked over a year ago, it was by Crazy Korean Cooking! Everything came out delicious - crispy rice and all - except for one really weird vegetable he bought that tasted like sad fish. Not the bowl's fault, of course. :)
My main complaint is that it seems like the bowl doesn't actually fit the plate it came with. It rattles around on it and never quite sits flat. It's not a major issue, but I am still a little disappointed. Overall, happy with my purchase and the excitement on his face was priceless!
Update: May 28: I ordered 3 more large pots with lids so each of us in our family can enjoy bibimbap and other dishes that I plan to cook in these pots!
Cooking multiple times a week - I don't mean adding hot product or anything like that. I live in a small apartment and I don't have a normal stove, so I use a hotplate to cook with. I just throw the bowl on the coil and it heats up and cooks the food no problem. I've cooked everything from eggs, to stirfry, to ramen in it with no problems.
Bean Hell - I once fell asleep while warming up some beans on the stove in this bowl, and woke up about 6 hours later to a room filled with smoke and the smell of burnt beans. The beans by this point were less a vegetable and more charcoal than anything else. Bowl took no damage from the extended heating session and I was able to completely clean out the cement like interior with only minimal soaking and scraping. My apartment by contrast smelled of burnt beans for months afterwards.
Cooking the Plate - The plate is made out of a heavy plastic. In my infinite wisdom and attentiveness, I once placed the plate on the hotplate with the bowl on top of that. I eventually figured it out when trying to figure out what was causing the awful smell in my apartment. I figured something had gotten stuck to the coils or something. No, I'm just an idiot. The plate survived, though the coils did leave a faint impression on the bottom of the plastic where the plate had been sitting. To clarify, using the bowl/plate combo normally does not cause it to smell nor does it leave impressions on the plate. It's only when you decide to cook the plate that this becomes a thing. In addition, I will add that in spite of being plastic, there was no melting or deformation caused by the heating.
So yeah. Looks great, cleans up easily, and survives most trials that you might run into. While I probably wouldn't recommend dropping the bowl on a cement floor, I definitely would recommend picking one up.
