Review
It was incredibly easy to read, easy on the eyes (wonderful photography and art) and easy to implement. I am already using many of his techniques with my clients. I wish I could give it 10 stars!
I love the graphical nature of this book. It's not just a bunch of words and bullet points of things to do to try to fix your problems. It's real stories by real people, with links to supporting videos and content online. Pretty cool!
The layout is just fantastic. It's the kind of book that I can just pick up and read a section any time I feel like it.
Roger is truly the leader in his field, and it is really helpful that he shares all of this information that he uses to help HUGE companies solve their HUGE problems. Makes mine feel like small potatoes, but that also makes me feel better.: )

It reflects a plethora of creative principles to meet learning styles and capture the attention of the reader. Love the quotes, photos, the author's generosity of his Online Resources. Firestein's vision is clear and pure: to share CPS and the spirit of CPS as intended by the original creators, Alex Osborn and Dr. Sidney J. Parens.
It's practical, readily useful, and a guide every facilitator of CPS should have in their pocket.

According to Firestien, he had three separate but interdependent objectives when creating this book:
o Help his reader to identify the real problem to be solved rather than waste time and money solving the wrong problem
o Consistently create ideas, making their business recession-proof and competition-proof
o Grow their business by solving the tough problems that are holding it back
In order to be deliberately creative, Firestien suggests, you need to be able to think in three ways:
1. Divergent thinking: Explore lots of possibilities, generate lots of ideas
2. Combinent thinking: Combine ideas from many different sources
3. Convergent thinking: Evaluate all ideas and select those with greatest potential
You also need a simple, repeatable way to take on new challenges and develop innovative solutions that result in productive change. "Enter Creative Problem-Solving (CPS)...a recipe for deliberate creativity." More specifically, these are the4 steps, accompanied by comments of mine:
Step 1: Clarify the Problem
Comment: Only after you identify the right problem to be solved
Step 2: Generate Ideas
Comment: To repeat, LOTS of possible solutions from LOTS of different sources
Step 3: Develop Solutions
Comment: Focus on degree of difficulty, probable implications and consequences, and direct relevance to your organization's strategic objectives
Step 4: Plan for Action
Comment: Identify primary tasks, division of labor, sequence, likely contingencies
I was especially interested, also, in what Roger Firestien shares when reflecting back on his "40 years in creativity," ten lessons that can be of substantial value to almost any executive in almost any organization. They range from "Invest in your core principles for the sake of your employees, your product and your customers" to "Practice. Practice. Practice." All of them are discussed on Pages 134-135.
I highly recommend this book as well as Arthur I. Miller's The Artist in the Machine: The World of AI-Powered Creativity.
The main points of this process have been well-known and widely studied for years. We’ve been taught the primary steps – Clarify the Problem, Generate Ideas, Develop Solutions and Plan for Action, all steps widely lauded as being the “how tos” of innovation. But as easy as these steps have been to embrace, we frequently have little to show for our clarifying, generating, developing and planning.
This is where Roger Firestien’s work becomes cookbook-like and provides a magnificent, assortment of tools to achieve the results we’ve so long worked toward. The magic is indeed in the details – and Dr. Firestien presents a variety of reproducible forms and worksheets to capture creative input and help workgroups generate valuable ideas.
All parts of the process are covered not only in the book, but also in a wide assortment of well-produced videos which detail and teach the creative process. There is on-line support, as well, in a content-rich web site. All the materials, print and video, are wonderfully designed and developed with a contemporary flair.
A terrific recipe. Bon Appetit!

Not only is this book a delight to read, I love that Dr. Firestien included a video series that details the entire process along with downloadable worksheets.
Every business leader should be concerned and curious about innovation and creativity. Even mundane tasks and projects can be improved when you put a new lenses on an existing process.
This book shows you how you can generate 100 ideas in 10 minutes. Imagine what that kind of thinking could do for your organization!
If you’re familiar with the innovation process, you will love this book. If you’re new to the landscape - this read will be a game changer for you! Create in a Flash has been aded to my must-read recommendation list for colleagues and clients.
