I recommend this book for primary teachers and reading specialists. It can spice up a current curriculum or help those just starting out. It has great blackline masters and ideas for spicing up your current curriculum. It works with Fountas & Pinnell, Reading First and any basal. Anyone can use it and benefit from it. I have taught 1st grade for 6 years and I think the book is great! It is not too wordy and has a lot of great ideas to keep my curriculum up to date.

There are lots of teacher idea books out there. There are tons of research-based journals and textbooks. This volume combines the best of both worlds. It is well written and provides useful resources, grounded in the research. There are charts to explain theory, and activities to implement them to develop strong readers in a variety of levels. There are assessments checklists that help peg specific issues at different skill levels.

This is one worth investing in. I'm glad I did.

Creating Strategic Readers is a valuable resource for elementary teachers. It is an excellent mix of theory, research, and practicality! Each of the 5 components of reading, as identified by the National Reading Panel in 2000, is addressed. You will want to have your own copy!

Three years ago, I went to a one-day, six-hour workshop where Valerie presented many useful reading strategies and fun classroom activities/lessons for students of all different reading levels. I really enjoyed her workshop, and I applied many of her research based lessons/activities to both my students who were struggling readers and my two young sons (who were learning how to read). The activities listed in the book are enjoyable, adaptable for different reading levels and ages, and can be led by students. The lessons/activities focus on phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. In addition, assessment checklists are also included to help target specific issues within a particular lesson/activity. I recommend this book for preschool, elementary, and special education teachers, and also reading specialists.

This product has been useful for classroom lessons. I have used the activities in there to help struggling readers and the activities make it an enjoyable learning experience. The activities can also be student lead. There are many different levels to use with all grades. Some focuses are phonic development and phonological awareness, and it uses a language approach.

This book takes all the "stuff" we keep hearing about 90min blocks, guided reding, CAI, Shared reasding, etc. and puts is all together in a simple way that makes sense! Ideas you can take and use right away in your classroom and see results. A must for all primary reading teachers!

This book was recommeded to me by the Literacy Coach at our school. It has good information and helpful strategies. However, if you have been in the teaching field for over 25 years, you may just want to review articles/strategies that you have tucked away in your filling cabinet. Much of the information was not new to me.
