This book provides great guidance on where to start, and the steps to take, to ultimately become an off-grid homesteader. Teri encourages the reader to homestead and life off-grid for his/her own reasons, whatever they may be. I appreciate that she does not preach a certain reasoning, but that she touches on the most popular reasons one would do so. She isn't trying to push her lifestyle on you, she simple shows you what obstacles you will need to overcome, and she suggests ways to do so.
"Creating Your Off-Grid Homestead" explores a broad range of topics from building shelters & animal care to composting toilets & gardening in a matter-of-fact way with just a touch of humor. One of my favorite things is that she reinforces the idea of avoiding debt and only spending what you can afford - this is very important to us. I also enjoy how Teri helps you reflect on your own priorities so you can address which steps you need to take to make your off-grid dream a reality.
It feels like she wrote this book for us - "us" being those folks who want to go off-grid but are afraid to get started, or don't know where to start. Many subjects are discussed, and many questions are answered, but it also leaves room for continued research of how these subjects best apply to our own unique situations. This book is thoughtfully written and organized in a way that makes it a quick read, full of wonderful information and inspiration. It has really put a "fire under our butts" - we are dreaming big and this book has really facilitated that! Love it!
The book begins by defining the aspects of off-grid living and personal reasons for choosing it. Then she breaks down an off-grid lifestyle into its basic components and describes her and others' experiences handling them. Throughout, she assures the readers that many options exist to match personal choice, current situation, financial capabilities, etc.
I especially liked the thorough discussion on the potential of Tiny Houses for achieving off-grid goals. Also helpful, her chapters end with a useful list of “Questions for Thought” for the reader to consider. Finally, at the end of the book, the selected list of resources used by Teri at their homestead gives the reader an ideal starting point for finding the products most useful in creating an off-grid homestead.
